Must be one of the most intelligent, courteous, cultured players in the game today. The calm way in which he explained to Gordon that he deserved a red card, the leadership quality he showed praising Ngumoha whilst taking care to keep the lad's feet firmly on the ground. And I was really impressed, during our home game with Liverpool, when he ran the length of the pitch to commiserate with and check on Wes Burns when Wes was injured. All his interviews are thoughtful and measured. I hope we continue to see him after he finishes playing but I fancy that punditry may not be enough for him.

Always liked him as a footballer, wasn't too sure how he was as a character, he can be a bit unfathomable, but he has been a credit.

Great player, seems like a nice guy.

We do set an incredibly low bar for judging a footballers character though... explaining a red card and consoling a fellow pro. Nice touches, and commendable, but its a shame that we pick them out as being exceptional.

On top of that, he has to be one of the top defenders of all time, absolutely commanding presence. I originally started following his progress at Celtic, you could see he had a huge future. Was suprised that he had to take a smaller step to Southampton before a top club. Even as a youngster he had Real Madrid or Barcelona level written all over him. Very fitting that he is raising the trophies that his career deserves.

Let's not get carried away, I mean he's obviously good but to say one of the best of all time when you have witnessed the likes of Mark Fish and Graham Harbey wear the blue of Town . . .

I'm a big liker of sportsmanship and he seems to be very fair. If only more of his fellow professionals were like that.

Unlike Fernandez who tried to hook a penalty miss on a ref who "invaded" his space !!

I wonder if we could get him on loan?

lets face it he is a total plank... how he is captain material is beyond me! made himself look silly YET AGAIN! Virgil is the kind of captain you want for your team - not only a great player, but a fantastic leader who leads by example.....

Fernandes for a long time was about the only ManU player who actually cared or had much energy. Unsurprising they made him Captain, not spoilt for choice.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I don't think he blamed the ref for the penalty miss, just he was upset the ref didn't apologise to him.......!

Not sure what's worse!

I retract, I retract, nobody competes with Fish and Harbey, obviously. Mark Fish was painful to watch.

Very similar I'd say to Alan Hanson.

I think it's completely unacceptable for a Ref to (almost) run into a bloke who's about to take a penalty.
Regardless of any reaction or excuse for a bad penalty, he absolutely needs to know how to run around someone. And the Ref should absolutely apologise.

Or as manager sometime in the future.
