Could this influx of players (especially on the right side) means that when Burns recovers from injury the club will look at moving him on.
With several players purchased when still league one are the club now upgrading in those positions to, reluctantly, move them on.

Tough one with Wesley with the injury, even when fit he's going to have a lot of competition. Contract up next summer as well, wouldn't surprise me greatly if we don't see much more of Burns in a Town shirt. That one will sting, he's been superb for us on and off the ball. I don't think so, I felt that Wes was good enough in the prem to show he could step up, he was just getting to grips with the better quality when he picked up the injury. Also with Chappers, his movement off the ball is superb and caused defenders problems. |  | | |

He's also in his 30's now. He'll have half an eye on 1 more big pay day to set him up for retirement, its not like his career has been full of silly money given his trajectory.

My only fear for Wes, is that after such a long lay off, and age not really on his side. Will he be able to get back to the old Wes Burns? Moreso, will he be able to improve on the old Wes Burns?. As our squad is rapidly improving..
My guess is that he runs down his current deal (Summer 26), gets all the help during that time to recover and condition. And hopefully we get to see him run out in a Town shirt before the season ends. So he can get the farewell that he deserves. | | | |

I think he's probably my favourite player of that era, and pound-for-pound he's arguably jostling with Morsy for the title of most influential.
Gamechanger's first signing, came in when everyone was leaving, whole team struggled under a manager who clearly couldn't get what he wanted to happen in his head to work out in the real world, and then goes on to nail down his position so effectively that it becomes known as 'the Burns role' even when he's not playing.
Fair bit of noise assuming he would be upgraded at Championship level but again made himself one of the teams' most indispensable players and think his performances at Prem level were very harshly judged. Let's get it right, the promotion-winning team simply did not function as well as it did without Burns' influence. Perfect example of an understated, non-flashy player but who is so important to performance and ethos of the team.
If we had all of him, Ogbene and McAteer fit I'd still be giving him the nod to be honest. Could end up being a situation similar to Broadhead where things don't really align for us to keep him so the best thing to do ends up saying goodbye which as you say would really sting. |  |

Agree with all of that. From day 1 really, scoring 12 goals in his first season in the sort of wing back role, role evolved but his positional and tactical discipline has been outstanding. His off the ball work is so good, with the ball his direct straight line running, ability to get us up the pitch, his pace and athleticism. Nobody has got close to replicating that in his absence, I think that's something we'll be looking to McAteer to do.
Most of the criticism Burns received was people who either weren't really watching closely or don't understand his role in the side. When fit he was a nailed on starter under McKenna because without fail he was trusted to execute his role. | | | |

I think it really depends how fit he comes back and if he can stay fit. His game is so reliant on physicality and sharpness his performances really dip when he isn't fully there. You saw that last season where you could tell he wasn't 100% when coming back from the first injury. Shame because at his best he was at the very least a nuisance in the PL. |  | | |

Replacing the likes of Burns, Chaplin, Broadhead, Burgess etc only really works/sensible, if you make upgrades on them - that is the real aim, constant and seamless development and improvement of the squad.
However, based on evidence, we haven't as of yet found any improvement in that area, whilst spending extraordinary amounts attempting to do so. |  | | |

There are loads of great things written here about Burns. However time is not on his side and he’s out of contract end of season (I think). We’ve since moved forwards with McAteer with Ogbene supporting. Burns has been great before but there is unlikely the time for him to prove fitness, get the game time, then secure the extension of a deal. Sadly. He then gets to walk at the end of his contract next summer. Assume we are PL then that works, small possibility he stays if we haven’t been promoted. | |

I'm not prone to being overly sentimental about players, but my gut tells me that Burns isn't quite done here yet. Chaplin certainly isn't, we don't have many left now who have been with us on the journey and really understand what it is to play for this club, McKenna knows there will be times this season when we will need the likes of Chappers in the side. |  |

All good things come to an end. He could still absolutely do a great job for us but with Ogbene, Mcateer and potentially the Norwegian + Johnson, Clarke, Philogene all able to play there it does seem like we have too many. Someone will need to move on and with his age it makes some sense.
Man that would be a tough one again to see go. Love Burns.
