So does Harry Clarke stay with a squad place? Or a late incomer?
Am I missing someone? on 16:38 - Sep 1 with 861 views | portmanking | EADT suggested that Clarke has a squad place. I can't believe a parchute club has Baggott as a 4th choice CB, 2 wholly average Championship keepers, 1 recognised left back, only 3 *quality* Championship midfielders and an assortment of lightweight wide forwards. Also asking a LOT of Azon if Hirst pulls his hamstring for 6 weeks. Someone like Danny Ings as an experienced 3rd choice would've been sensible IMO.

I would take Bamford at this stage, or an EPL loan

Yeah because Danny Ings is going to come here to firstly be 3rd choice striker and secondly be on wages you'd want for a 3rd choice striker He was on £125k a week at west ham. God knows what Sheff Utd are paying him!

Certainly high risk. 3 senior & experienced centre backs (although I'm hopefully that's sufficient in an area where rotation beyond those 3 would only be forced), Matusiwa hasn't played here before albeit has started well, the 2 next to him are prone to injury, a big money 19 year old who is understandably wet behind the ears, Clarke & Philogene yet to really get their Town careers going, young and inexperienced cover for Hirst who hasn't played in this country before. Big, big emphasis on the likes of Greaves, O'Shea, Szmodics, Philogene & Akpom to really step up to the plate over the next few months. I'm trusting the process, feels high risk though with the level of proven players who have left.

Thanks Phil. At least we're well covered at right back.

Indeed, although right-back is also covering left-back, of course, and a bit at centre-half as well. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Absolutely there should be an emphasis on the players you mention stepping up - they're £100m worth of players who have proven it at this level before. It's been a slow-ish start to the season but they haven't become bad players.

I assume Furlong will actually be fourth choice CB instead of Baggott if required. But it does feel like Baggott, in particular, is wasted being part of the 25.

I don't know what you mean. McKenna has always favoured an asymmetric approach and 4 right backs and 1 left back makes perfect sense, thank you very much!

Yes, I would guess that might be the case. Humphreys may also be seen as Leif cover, may depend on the game, also potentially a number 10 as that's more where he played with Wycombe. Glad he's here, even if he may initially not be too often in the picture.

I suppose there's logic with letting Chaplin go in that regard - Humphreys can cover the ten position as well.

I don't think Baggott is wasted, I think his place is wasted. Did nobody want him then? In any division? On loan? I mean if we're seriously saying that a right back would be 4th choice CB and he would be 5th, surely he's only here because nobody wanted him? There's room for a really healthy debate as to the relative merits of Woolfy, Burgess and the ones we've kept ahead of them. But Baggott? Seems like a strange decision. One of many. Let's hope that Egeli and Azon are ridiculously good. If so, no problem. If not, problem.

As I said previously I do not see any sense in giving Baggott another contract and then loaning him out again. Nobody knows how good the guy is because he hasn't had a chance. I saw him a couple of seasons ago against Fulham in a cup game. He came on as sub, didn't in anyway look out of place and scored our only goal in a 1-3 defeat. It is really a case of Baggott being sold or being part of the squad.
