EADT quite pathetic. 18:36 - Sep 1 with 3121 viewsOldFart71

I find the situation regarding the EADT quite pathetic,
Unless you subscribe you can't even get an update on the transfer window .
Not in my opinion doing themselves any favours.
I don't expect to read the whole newspaper for nothing, but when it comes to our home team they should allow more access than a headline and a few words whilst removing the rest of the article. PATHETIC.

but also not even subscribe?

Impartial (and investigative) journalism are fooked if everyone has this attitude. Accountability slips completely away and the powerful (rich bullies) simply get away with whatever they want.

Having worked in the industry as a photographer often car sharing with a Journo.
I can tell you, it’s all too late.

People like OldFart don’t want to pay for journalism anymore and the result is a local press (Reach, Trinity Mirror) who’s idea of journalism is getting a 21 year old uni graduate to trawl Twitter all day for ‘stories’ on minimum wage.

The EADT have so far managed to resist but with attitudes like this, it’s only a matter of time.
Of course, that’s what the super rich and the grifters want. They’re the real enemies of the people, not immigrants, which is designed to keep us looking the other way whilst reducing the impact of, and trust in good journalism.

The biggest problem that they have is that their content is effectively in the public domain as soon as it is published. I get that professional journalism costs but there appear to only be 3 options: put it behind a subscription and hope enough are willing to pay; a funded model along the lines of the BBC; advertising to pay for it.

There are problems with each of these not least accountability and partiality (less of an issue in sport than political coverage).

I do fear for the future of journalism and the implications that brings.

there is a kind of 4th way though, you put it behind a pay wall, but what you give the reader/subscriber is the quality writing, photography & journalism to go with it. Ive seen it with motorsport and cycling, there are journalists producing content you have to pay for, sometimes it seems alot sometimes its not, but they give you really indepth details and its well written and theyre knowledgeable about the subject, and thats what you want really.

I think alot of the issue in newspapers, is newsco's devaluing what content they produce to the point it has no value, and then stuffing it behind a pay wall anyway.

I mean the EADT/EDP/Star group has been doing that for decades frankly, to the point their news articles are either written by interns, or some weird AI, and the sport is the only thing left that has any value for them.

it is really easy to get around their pay wall

Just search the web for pay wall bypass

Just hit airplane mode as soon as the article loads and it stops the firewall kicking in.

Pathetic (x3) is a weird word for it.

They're a business trying to make money, in whatever way they see best. You might not agree with it, but they aren't a public service to Town fans.

Poll: So, how many league wins did you see in person?

I’m happy to pay for it. It isn’t much money, and journalism needs funding.

You may want everything important to you for free, but it is clear that ad funded journalism … especially as-funded local journalism … just won’t work.

The big boys (Facebook, google …) hoover up all the online advertising revenues, leaving crumbs for everyone else. And so the local news sites become worse and worse and more and more clickbaity.

If I decided it wasn’t worth it for me I’d cancel it. But I wouldn’t come on here bleating that I couldn’t get it for free.

Am happy to subscribe for the EADT, it's a business after all ,so why should we expect it to be free?

A month or so ago you could 6 months online digital version of the daily paper for £6- cheaper than a pint!
I think I pay about 30 odd quid annually.

Their website is painful these days. Like you say, nothing extra gets offered for a paid subscription. And even if you do choose to pay for it, you can barely read it with all the Ozempic or plastic surgery ads all over the screen.

Newsquest acquired Archant and questioned why they weren't monetizing popular content.

I think Stu, Alex etc are hamstrung in that respect.

Their podcasts are free on audio podcast platforms, but the YouTube version is subscription only, I think.

Dig deep enough into the ownership of any newspaper and you find a Murdoch connection.

We are lucky enough to have TWTD as a resource.

A few times a day I try and click on any banner ads on here that look remotely interesting, but in more general terms - having essentially had free online versions of print newspaper for 20+ years - the culture has shifted to the point where not many will happily for an online newspaper in the way they paid for a print version pre-mass market internet.

Poll: Another Tragical Vegas poll. Would you rather?
