put bbc2 on right now. Story about how loads of prem players have been scammed out of money. Unfortunately I get the feeling we might see Gary Speed later in this and it will explain a lot.

I've recorded it but had exactly the same thought when they were talking about it on R5 earlier on. It sounded as though it's had a really destructive impact on some.

bbc2 now on 22:04 - Sep 2 with 2219 views | bluelagos | I read the preview in the paper and was lacking much empathy, thinking stupid/greedy footballers were taking advantage of tax breaks and got caught by the taxman... But is nothing like that at all. Financial advisors were dodgy as and these guys were a bit over trusting, but that would always be the case with young men, too much money and people looking to fleece them. Decent people let down and facing destitution. For nothing more than a bit of niavity. And I guess due to their previous high earnings and a feeling that footballers are overpaid, many will not be as sympathetic as they should be. Very well made programme.

Absolutely shocking documentary. Interesting that is was investigated by the city of London police and not the met. I was told only today at how dodgy they are and I had no reason to agree or disagree. This makes it fascinating. Obviously not just about football players, but they are especially vulnerable. VULNERABLE is a very important word in this day and age. It is obviously not just money that can ruin footballers. Lots of stories of honey traps in the last few years too. Poor lads are only kids and make rash decisions. Did I notice Iwan Roberts right at the end in the group too?

My only bone of contention was some of the comments painting hmrc as the bad guys. They werent and can hardly be expected not to collect taxes where someone has been fleeced and taxes are still due. Change the law by all means, but I think it harsh to portray the taxman as the villan, it was the financial advisers. And in terms of helping rhe guys out, surely todays wealthier clubs and players could help out? The clubs had a duty of care and many players simply followed and were led by their managers, who it was shown were on kick backs from the financial advisors. Howard Wilkinson would no doubt claim his innocence but the reality is his commissions look dodgy as, albeit at the time he was probably as niave as the players.

The issues here are tricky to analyse as there is lots going on. It does look like they were fleeced by projects that were set up to fail. Mind you the credit crunch is a big player in this as that ruined the world for years. Financial advice on that kind of scale and even more so now must be difficult to regulate. The one way the v11 will get their money back is by the conflicts of interest in some of those deals. To me that is why this will also never be resolved as those that make the laws, also fleece the taxpayer with their own conflicts of interest. In recent times lots of conflicts with the buying of PPE during the lockdown etc. but there have been many more much more recently. Those of you who like a good read/conspiracy perhaps start looking into the city of London police. Fascinating some of the things I've heard about them.

They aren't going to get any of their money back & they know it. The issue is whether HMRC should be aggressively pursuing legitimate back tax claims on these schemes. There was a flood of such schemes generated by Gordon Brown's daft idea of giving film investment a 100% tax break. The law has long determined that schemes set up purely to avoid tax are in fact illegitimate. I wouldn't expect footballers to have known that & I have sympathy for unwary people, footballers or not, who have lost most of what they own & subsequently are being made bankrupt by the IR pursuing back taxes. I have less sympathy for people who invest unwisely - some of these were obviously risky property schemes and, contrary to popular belief, not all properties go up in value but if they put all their savings in with one non-mainstream company, they were exceptionally foolish.

There are literally millions of people who have suffered from losing their life savings because of bad financiial advice resulting from IFAs selling them totally unsuitable products. IFAs are regulated by the FCA, but there is a grey area as to the investment products they promote.
bbc2 now on 08:35 - Sep 3 with 825 views | Swansea_Blue | A powerful watch. Hell of a punchline in the middle (won’t spoil for anyone planning to watch, although you can predict it coming as you watch through the first half of the film). Some serious cover upping going on somewhere with these individuals being hung out to dry by HMRC despite being acknowledged as victims of crime. This coup happened to anyone. It’s not about unwise or risky investments. It’s about fraud.

I would imagine it's that there are a lot of advisors out there who don't give a damn about the footballers they advise beyond how much money it can make them.

the 2 men behind Kingsbridge Asset Management deny wrongdoing (they would, wouldn't they) & it will be near impossible to prove fraud against them. The world is full of dubious financial advisers & most of them are not directly fraudulent, but take out high commissions & often invest in dubious assets. Footballers, with large sums of disposable income, are always going to be targeted by such sharks but they are often the victims of poor & risky investment decisions, rather than outright fraud.

City of London specialise in fraud crimes. If you ever have problems with credit card fraud or similar, call them not your local lot
