Marcus Stewart by a country mile. Paul Cooper was a very good club keeper but nowhere near international level. If we had Shilton, Clemence or Jennings in goal we would have won the league on more than one occasion.

Best uncapped player at Town? on 11:11 - Sep 7 with 907 views | Swansea_Blue | Thought I’d nailed it with Whymark, but the silly arse had a cap. So another vote for Stewart here. One of the best strikers in the PL. The trouble is it was all too brief and he’d have needed to show a few seasons at the top level to get a look in.

Ordinarily I'd agree with you, but in 2002 Michael Ricketts 'won' a cap so.....

Maybe Leif if you’re talking current squad, although there’s probably the best part of 10 left backs ahead of him at the moment. Could perhaps make an argument for Matusiwa. Played in Ligue 1, was a €16m signing a few years ago and has Netherlands U21 caps but no senior. Again I wouldn’t imagine he is anywhere near their thinking right now though. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I was screaming for Leif to be included in the Euro 2024 squad. Then I saw him play in the Premier League last season and realised why Southgate was correct in leaving him out.

Agreed - I always thought this. Cooper was unfortunate to play at a time that we had so many top quality 'keepers. Having said that, it was a bit of a toss up who was best from the 3 anyway - Cooper wasn't necessarily the 3 best of the 3, it was just timing that saw him not considered as Shilton (1970) and Clemence (1972) were already established before Cooper's heroics in the mid to late 70s

I have to disagree on cooper, but that ok - we all see things differently . Cooper never had the opportunity to prove himself as an international, so we will never know. Don't also forget his European experience.

I think Phil Parkes was also considered above Coops at the time and even he only got 1 England cap.

Paul Cooper made 433 league appearances in the top flight. That to me is an incredible statistic for a player to make and not get a call up. And considering the European experience appearances he had for the club makes it more incredible for me. After Ron Greenwood left the England job in 1982, Terry Bucther asked him privately if Cooper was ever in his thoughts to receive a call up. Greenwood said he did but felt Corrigan just pipped him as third best keeper TBH Cooper was unlucky to have so many good keepers around at the time. Apart from Shilton, Clemence, Corrigan you also had Parkes (1 cap), Rimmer (1 cap) & Bailey (who somehow got two full caps) [Post edited 7 Sep 12:31]

Gary Bailey won two, although slightly later than Cooper's heyday. I don't think he was ever near a call given those in front of him.

I think that Coopers lack of height was always going to be a big reason he wasn't called up. There were good keepers around at the time who were far taller.

I always considered Cooper short for a 'keeper, but that was a visual impression. In truth there was little in it - 1.80m vs 1.83m for Shilton & Clemence. Guess it's the psychological 6' though.
Best uncapped player at Town? on 16:22 - Sep 7 with 9 views | HighgateBlue | I don't think he was good enough in his one proper season in the top flight to be compared with the likes of Marcus Stewart. Even just looking at players playing in not dissimilar roles, he hasn't achieved as much as a Clapham or a Venus. I really hope that he can get back to making the sort of attacking contributions that he made two years ago. Those contributions rightly started potential whispers around England caps, and big money moves. But the reality is that he couldn't realistically have been capped without achieving anything of note in the top flight.
