They're not perfect. But generally we've seemed solid. Apart from Derby we've only conceded a goal a game, which isn't dreadful. We've been struggling in front of goal but hopefully the new signings will change this.

woolfenden et al conceded more than a goal a game in the promotion season, so it's not a promotion deal-breaker. the main problem is we're not scoring enough yet

Yep, got much more of a connection to a Town academy product that played all of his football here than the yo-yo mercenary that replaced him

Which is basically saying I’d prefer to have an inferior team just so academy products can play. If we want to get promoted we have to strive to have the best, and O’Shea is better than Woolfie

This precisely sums up where we are.

It's often said you don't lose games if you keep a clean sheet. Perfectly true, but it may often lead to draws, which is mid-table results. It can equally be said that you don't win games without scoring - and in our promotion season, we scored in abundance, often just outscoring the opposition in high scoring games.

We're not firing up front right now, and that's where we need to improve most. I've been slightly critical about Hirst not being sharp enough up front, but that's not the entire story - he's best at creating chances around him, and our other attackers haven't contributed yet, unlike in previous seasons.

We have a potent attacking line up now, and for me focusing on occasional defensive missteps is not where we need to look. Once we start scoring more freely, we have a solid backline, and that will bring the wins we need.

An interesting thread.

I think we have forgotten how porous our defence was in the season we got promoted. It was recognised as the weak part of the team - I think we et in 15 more than both Leicester and Soton. I loved Wolfie and was sad that he left, but let's not pretend he was part of the best defence in the league.

IIRC we all thought at the end of that season that we'd need a serious defence upgrade if we were to do anything in the Prem.

the defensive record was just one better than 18th place qpr, we managed 3 of 23 clean sheets at home (strangely, we were better away on that metric)

Question for you, mate.. do you ever watch football or just look at stats? This isn't a computer game or whatever. Kipre was WB's POTS a couple of season's back. Sorry, but I think stats can assist, tweak and/or optimise at a higher level, but what the f@ck is wrong with going mostly with a gut feeling or opinion . Bit old school, I know..

Because gut feeling only works if you are lucky, although stats don't always tell the whole picture they do give a good indication of what is happening.
