surname is double barrel but said as one word. Like this: Wallegly

wall egg lee

now add them together

wallegglee

Don't let the laziness of Sky commentators and the other simpletons creep in.

Thank you

Without wanting to be too critical, that's bobbins.

First up, and most importantly, the W is pronounced pretty much like a V is in English.

Then what you've done (probably) is listened to a Norwegian commentary of his name and come up with "Wallegly" when "Varlegli" would probably be closer.

Having said that, to pronounce it in that way, would be like a Norwegian, having spent a day in a Glasgow pub, saying the correct pronunciation of Paul Lambert is in one word: Poorlambu, where the "bu" is pronounced as in "but", but dropping the "t".

What we probably should be saying, as non-native Norwegians is /ˈvɑlːəˈeɡli/ or VARLəEGLi, where the "ə" sound is the same as "er" when we say "sistəbothərə" or sister-botherer.

And then there's i-BAN a-THON
and marseh-LEE-no NOON-yes

It was interesting watching the extended highlights linked from this site with a Sheffield United commentator who clearly holds the record for not needing to take a breath for at least 45 minutes. He used Leif which suggests he found Davis too difficult!

Phil, can we have a definitive pronunciation for Walle Egeli please?

I might just go with 'the Norwegian lad' until we nail down the right pronunciation.

That's a good idea - we could call him Swe.

Is that pronounced "swe" or "sve"? Or simply read out as "S-W-E"?

My partner actually comes from the same home town as him in Norway. She’s confirmed it’s pronounced

Vollar (rhymes with collar)
Ey - geh - lee

josh carter

Came here to check up on how our boy did on his debut 🔥🥳 He is from my home city as well, so rooting a little extra for him and Ipswich now!

Its Vall-eh Eh-geh-lee. Walle is almost the same as the english word valley, just... with a different ending. Not vall-lee, but vall-eh. Say omelette. The way the e in "ome" is pronounced - thats the way the eh in vall-eh also is. Om-eh-let. Vall-eh. I can not for the life of me think of an english word that ends like this - so thats my best example, sorry.

Eh-geh-lee. Eh like the start of the word echo (eh-kow), geh like saying "get" without the t, lee like the surname / name. Eh-geh-lee.

Hope that helps 😅 The kid is class... no matter what you end up calling him 😁
