Two things I’d change about football immediately… 19:57 - Sep 14 with 7507 viewsThatMuhrenCross

1) Move to 80 mins and stop the clock when the ball goes out of play, like rugby. Instant end to time wasting.

2) Referral based VAR system like cricket. Both captains get two or three reviews. If you get it wrong, you lose a review.

VAR is here to stay so it must be modified & the best idea is that if the VAR team can't agree that the decision is wrong within 30 seconds, the original decision stands.
Sin bin to replace yellow cards - might cut out the petty, deliberate fouls & it's the only thing that might quell time-wasting.
Yes a player should be able to take a free kick to himself, as in hockey.
Go back to the original handball law where it has to be "wilful".
No pre match handshakes.
Only 1 logo on team kit.
25 man squad must be numbered 1-25.

Remove all mentions of "a number 6, a number 8, a number 10, inverted wingers, False number 9's, The Press, Low Press, High Press" and other similar modern day speak.

And players numbers 1-11, with the programme (if any) showing them set out in 2-3-5 formation?
I would reduce the number of players on the bench to 3.

The game has changed enough over the last few years. Bar reversing some of those changes, I wouldn't be touching it.

Time wasting is often more about killing momentum, it's not necessarily about wasting time ironically. Even if it means you still have to play the allotted minutes you can still kill a team's momentum by faking injuries and taking your time. If anything it would give teams more licence to get away with it.

And the referral system idea just seems like an unnecessary can of worms. Also, you're then no longer just re-refereeing the game, you're almost letting players referee the game. Which player will have the authority to challenge the decision, the captain? What if he was nowhere near the incident, are they going to have a conflab with their bench before deciding? If so, how long will allowed for him to do that?

There's so much potential for further controversy that people don't think about. Just like when people were shouting for VAR in the first place, they just said "we need to use technology" - there was no serious plan or thought process behind it. Hence it's been a disaster.

I love cricket but it's a completely different sport played 5 times slower than football. It works in that, it wouldn't work in football.

I agree that time wasting has that double approach. However, there are lots of things that could be done if there was a real will to. Playing the time is one part of it. Yellow cards for unsporting behaviour. Not stopping the game for minor injuries but players have to make their own way to the dugout or at least off the pitch for treatment while the game continues. You could even allow rolling substitutes like hockey does. Removing the offside rule completely.

Mostly agree...

Away kit, White with black trim... And should be Adidas.

Agreed, as we are the blue and white army I prefer a white away kit (worn only when we play other teams in blue). I like it when clubs maintain their identify as much as possible rather than playing in all different colours. Ipswich in red doesn't feel right to me.

1-11 is hard though when the players have names on their shirts (which I like, so long as they are surnames).

The number of substitutes is getting out of hand. I would probably say three subs should be allowed, from five named on the bench. I appreciate more subs helps us this season, but not in the Premier League.

1 to 11 must start every match unless unavailable and the next lowest number comes in so that substitutes are always higher numbered than those on the pitch.

Reading this thread I can’t but help thinking that some would also be proponents of burning the Spinning Jenny and abolishing electricity.
