Quite an interesting poll regarding support for the royal family/ monarchy. 17:57 - Sep 18 with 818 views | MattinLondon | The poll in question is a few days old but it makes for interesting reading - support for the royal family seems to be declining. I’m not expecting the country to become a republic within the next ten years (actually can’t see it happening within the next fifty years) but once the older generation dies out support for that particular institution might well fall sharply. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/monarchy-support-record-low-trum
Quite an interesting poll regarding support for the royal family/ monarchy. on 18:02 - Sep 18 with 782 views | J2BLUE | The fact it's been done just before Trump comes for the state visit has probably skewed it by quite a bit. I've gone the other way. From staunch republican to reasonably supportive.

I’m in the ‘republic’ camp but realise that at the moment, I’m in the minority. I would limit the royal family and tax all of their assets like a non-royal. I would also like to see their finances being accountable to the last penny. But for privacy I would allow a personal allowance of £150k which is theirs.

Charles and William get one castle each and enough land to keep the public out. Everything else goes back to state control and the profits ploughed back into public service. No need to kill them. Or if they refuse, they can be repatriated to Germany or wherever. All assets and wealth to be returned to the British people. If they want to sell the castles or make money from their name so be it, as long as it’s taxed and not hidden offshore.

Just make them pay inheritance tax like everyone else. And back date it.

Fotheringhay castle would do for at least one of them.

But Charles is not particularly likeable, and giving speeches about tackling climate change whilst turning up to food banks in a helicopter, and having the carbon footprint of 40 British citizens is the stuff of satire. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It did for Mary, Queen of Scots. In both senses of the phrase.

Should privatise them seeing as they're apparently so profitable for the country

“Likeable” is in the eye of the beholder. He was way ahead of his time in predicting environmental destruction, campaigning to protect the planet, and sticking to his beliefs, despite being roundly criticised and derided for them - invaluable and courageous support at the time. Rarely hear any praise for that, despite him being proved correct. Yes he’s not perfect, but I doubt anyone on here is. Hands up anyone who never makes a journey by car for the convenience, when they could use public transport? Not sure how you’d ensure security for a head of state on public transport these days either. And the huge number of engagements royals take on (nb including the individuals in their 70s, at which age most of us are retired) means that private car transport just wouldn’t be fast enough; might also have just as high a carbon footprint & cost, given that a security detail of several more cars would probably be needed to accompany him. Just as for politicians and Presidents … While I’m at it, just a mention too that the value of soft power seems to be seriously underrated by most people on here. No problem with the UK monarchy being modernised and streamlined though, including axing (not literally) the extended family hangers on, with the paedophile prince being exiled to some remote place with only sheep for company (apologies in advance to any sheep who may be affected by this suggestion).
