Having played so well last week... 04:15 - Sep 19 with 4358 viewsmuccletonjoe

The trick is now to do it again. I don't forsee the team being too different to that which started last week. Hopefully it will be 3 points , although I can't see Blackburn being so generous as Sheffield United were last week. Confidence is a wonderful thing, keep building that and the season will be taking an upward slant.

100%, two years ago confidence and momentum were key. It was great to get a statement win but also although in the first half Sheff Utd were not that bad and controlled most of the match. It was great to get a statement win but means nothing if we don't back it up. If we can win 3 or 4 of next 5 we should be able to kick on. We need to get in the top six if we can before next international break and then chase down top 2 from there.

As Phil reported in the new article on the TWTD front page, Darnell Furlong said yesterday 'People say it all the time, there’s no easy game in the Championship and it sounds cliché but it really is, anyone can beat anyone on the day.' If we go into the next five games expecting to win four of them then we are, maybe, asking to be disappointed. One game at a time still applies.

I’ve supported Town long enough to not be confident going into ANY game.

Just hope we start with some intensity- too many games we’ve let the oppo get the initiative early on. I think KM is naturally cautious, but we’ve got the speed and the quality to cause anyone in this division problems.

You have to feel Blackburn will be working on ways to stop Philogene, hopefully McAteer and Akpom can find some space. Need Hirst to have a good game.

Don't know why but I have a feeling KMcK is going to throw a curve ball into the equation this week and rest Hirst for either Azon or Akpom

Some would say it's probably be best leaving it alone after Hirst's performance last week but he's been flat out and played a lot of minutes from the start of the season

Would offer a different dimension as Hirst was a very good "finisher" when Delap came off last season

Dunno , just a hunch

This is where having Egeli on the other side can throw spanners in the works of teams trying to stop our wide threats. You can't cover everything.

I say that somewhat reservedly knowing that SGE is still young obviously and may not start regularly quite yet.

We have played well in previous games, especially Derby - we just lacked a cutting edge up front, and had a couple of 'moments' in defence.

So, playing well isn't so much in question - it's eliminating the defensive 'moments', and converting the xG into actual goals. We excelled on both accounts last game, and since both are related to confidence, it hopefully gives us the confidence to continue tomorrow.

I guess there is the worry that as we aren’t a fully well oiled machine (just yet) that results could be a mixed bag for a month or so.
That said, even if we are 70/80% of where we need to be (on paper) we should be too strong.

We’ll be good again... one day

That's the thing. Philogene may have played a blinder against SheffU, but we have so much additional firepower in the team and on the bench. If they over-mark him, there'll be more opportunities for Hirst (who also scored last Friday), Akpom, MacAteer (who does like to shoot), Szmodics (top Champ goalscorer), Clarke (likewise, also scored last game), Azon and hot-shot Walle Egeli. Without considering Nunez or Young on free kicks. Or Davis letting fly.

Basically, so long as we keep it on target (which was the biggest improvement from before the international break), we should be peppering their goal.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I just hope there is the acknowledgement that not every team will let us play the way Sheff Utd did in the second half and that Sheff Utd themselves made life tough for us in the first half.

Im sure the usual 'real-time reaction' doom-mongers will be on here if we're not 3-0 up inside 10 minutes.

I think the team will be the same at the start and the subs the same and only when we get weeks where it's Saturday, Tuesday/Wednesday, Saturday will KM rotate the squad.

Having all week with the players will help a great deal as well.

I actually think the way we set up last week, will suit us away from home.
Conceding a bit of possession and catching them on a quick transition. Inviting teams on to us, to try and negate the low block (in some games).

Think KM has enough tools in the box now to unlock the most disciplined of teams. Compared , to say, what we had available at Preston.
We have the trickery of Jaden and Clarke.
We have the powerful running of Akpom and Egeli, Jens Cajuste and Azon.
We have the guile of Nunez.
Set piece delivery of Davis, Young and Nunez.
Shots from distance, Nunez, Egeli, Taylor.

I can see a pattern coming where we do a lot of 2nd half damage in games With our bench and any tweaks KM does , after analysing the 1st half stuff.
Can see us sticking to the same 11 that started last week.

More importantly. We don't have any real drop off in quality with the "finishers".

I can honestly see us going on a decent run. 7-8 wins out of ten. And hopefully get back to that old feeling of "we're always going to score".

A win is a win.... 1-0 or 5-0.. And I think we'll see plenty of them in the coming weeks.
Teams can do all the prep they like against us. But we've got multiple ways of changing it up, in game. And a manager that knows how to.

Contrary to what you said..having played so well ..we played ok ..not so well, the difference was phylogene getting the goals and shef united been absolute dross .another club with better defence we probably could have sneaked a win . We need to have performance levels up a notch or two plus more goal threats coming from different players

The stats tend to disagree with that.

And a goal threat from more players? Hirst, Clarke, Akpom and Szmodics all threatened to score (ignoring the actual goals) - 21 shots did not come from Jaden.

Yes, SheffU were dross, but our performance was more than 'good', unless putting a very negative spin on it. Sure, we'll have to improve, but that performance would have won far more games than it loss against most teams.

Yes point taken..but championship only starting really and those "most " teams you talk about, will have vastly improved and set up a lot better..so can't take anything for granted..

Well, there's definitely more to come from us..
But imo , the difference wasn't just Phylogene...
Thought Leif, Furlong and Matusiwa in particular, all had really good performances.
Clarke and Nunez off the bench had decent cameos, too. Albeit against a team that was well beaten when they came on...
It was a good team effort, imo. But definitely not 100% up and running atm. Which is quite scary when you think about it.

Personally, I think 5-0, 6-0 wins don't happen that often.. We should just applaud the team and not think like they were handed it on a plate.... Just my op' and I appreciate your op', too.

I'd be pretty surprised by that. Hirst's played about 80 minutes of competitive football in the last 3 weeks, 70 against Sheff United and just a few for Scotland. He'll also be keen to prove a point back at Ewood I would think.

The most important bit was that (I think) 11 of those were on target. Which is the big contrast to a couple of weeks before. Those are the only ones which can become goals. Shooting accuracy is key.

Did we oaky do well? Between the boxes o thought first half we were easily second best.

Moments of quality, changed the game completely. But goals do that.

Bigger challenges ahead. We haven’t kept the ball well at ANY point this season…, except 30 minutes when well ahead in a game.

I doubt McKenna will is think we played well, at least I hope not.

We won’t get bailed out by Phil every week.

"We haven’t kept the ball well at ANY point this season..."

As I pointed out elsewhere, the stats show we have often dominated possession and momentum. Proof, if any was needed, that you don't actually watch any of our games.

Absolutely right. Here's hoping Blackburn already losing their first two home matches against nodge and Brum means they are low on confidence in front of their own fans.

It is important to get the first goal and ideally the second one too. The sooner we make keeping it tight and low blocks and impractical option for them the better. Otherwise it could be a long afternoon and help us if they get ahead. Fast start please Town!

The third could be key if we do. 3-0 up is far better than clinging on at 2-1.

Oh yes, absolutely. But 2 forces the opposition to change their approach if they are sitting back. Our finishing still concerns me a bit.
