How are you Lad?
Very good Dickie
Are you still working?
A bit. I’ve written your obit for The Guardian.
Will I like it?
You’ll be dead won’t you? So you'll never know.
(To passing strangers, loudly )
I’ll have to trust him won’t I? I’ll have to trust him won’t I?” — David Hopps (@davidkhopps.bsky.social) 2025-09-23T13:33:40.408Z | |

| RIP Dickie Bird. on 16:01 - Sep 23 with 2041 views | Radlett_blue | Bird was usually a popular umpire as he was always friendly with the players & enjoyed a bit of banter, while he also had a reputation as a very fair umpire (unlike some English umpires, despite the "best in the world" stuff) so touring teams usually liked him. He was definitely an "outer" rather than a "not outer" though. I was at the Lords Centenary Test in 1980 on a rain interrupted Saturday & some frustrated MCC members manhandled Bird as they felt there should have been more play. A mate of mine was in the Lords Tavern after the game & Bird walked in, obviously fancying a pint. There was a bit of a deathly hush, rather like when the bad guy walks into a Western saloon & one man broke the silence & said "Come on Dickie - when was the pitch really fit for play?" Bird put down his pint, looked straight at the man & said "Far as I was concerned lad, t'pitch was never fit for play". | |
