Proof our phone listen to us 10:20 - Sep 25 with 1958 viewsgiant_stow

I had a chat in a pub on Saturday about a niche puff product* where we went in to a lot of detail on how it works and a third party's experience of the ease of getting it.

Today I get adverts on Facebook for this product. I did no searching for it at all - the ad could only have come from the chat.

Old news in a way, but I'm now a believer - watch what you talk about near phones people.

*I don't want to reward the intrusion by using possible keywords or pointing anyone to this products' existence

Yes we've had some fun with this. As an experiment we've thought of something really random that we have never searched for online or spoken in a phone conversation about. Just talked about it face-to-face once to see if adverts turn up for it later online.
And sometimes they do. Mmmmmm.
We've also talked about a specific place or an animal and within a week the Lock screen on Windows has changed to be that. But that might just be the IT department listening in on us and manually taking the pi55.

I thought this was conspiracy theory bollox, but now...

The absolute tossers.

as someone who works in this field, i can tell you catagorically this happens.

its actually obvious when you think about it. most people have iphones or Alexas. - and they trigger when you say "hey siri" or "alexa."

well to do that, they have to listen to every single sound.... take it in, work out if its the trigger word - and off it goes doing its thing

the interesting bit is "what happens with the rest of that data" - and youll find that pretty much every company says they keep it in their convouted T&C's whilt maintaining the public "secure" posture -... how they then use it is subject to all sorts of convoluted laws, regulations, (including the processing of data under GDPR) and the upshot is - these companies believe theyve got the right to do with it what they want - and so far... noone has been aable to sucessfully legally challenge on this. (despite some noteable attempts)

the really creepy stuff is the hidden geolocation within your phone, based on your IMEI, IMEI2 and SSMIE - which geolocates you next to adverts based on triangulation - then trigger your advert preferences based on your phyiscal whereabouts.... thats proper george orwell stuff... and yes, its in every iphone since iphone 6

No ive heard it happen to too many people i trust not to be taken in by coincidence or happenstance. It definitely seems to be a thing. The problem of course is which app is it that's doing it.

It's like I heard a story about some kind of ring camera for home security bought from the usual cheap online suppliers. They connected it to their WiFi, but they know a thing or two about networks and have it locked down and logging attempts for security. Well the logs suddenly went nuts with attempts from inside his network to break out, this damn camera was trying to phone home basically, and home being about 5000miles east and share the feed. So he unplugged it and binned it.

There's a spy in the sky
There's a noise on the wire
There's a tap on the line
And for every paranoid's desire...

There's always someone looking at you.
