Ryder Cup 2025 thread 12:04 - Sep 26 with 9557 viewsThe_Romford_Blue

For those of us who will be watching this weekend, I thought a thread for it makes sense.

Who’d we reckon? I’ve had a lumpy bet on the Americans at 1.74 on the machine. For four reasons:
- Scottie Scheff. His singles point is almost automatic and he’s going to be lethal in the four balls as well.
- Depth. The yanks have every player ranked 23 or above in the rankings. Whereas Europe have 5 players ranked below that.
- Class. The Americans have 7 of the world’s top 10.
- Home advantage. That’s the main one for me. Only 2 away European victories in 45 years. I see no reason as to why that changes here. The course will be set up to suit the Americans.

Thought 1.74 was a proper price and have backed accordingly.

"Are you watching Donald Trump"

Loved to hear it.

Though he will have turned off the moment they lost.

Was he not there to graciously hand it over and congratulate the winning team?

Think I'm right, since we became Europe in 1979, Europe has won 13 matches & the US 9 matches. Before that we hardly won for many years & the constant US wins were like an exhibition contests. The Ryder Cup is alive & kicking!

We’ve got the better of lately but winning on US soil is always very tough. They’ve also got the better individuals in the rankings these days so were favorites and they smashed us last time in America, much like we done to them in Rome.

On the Ryder cup wiki currently

“From 2027, the USA will be able to pick players from Australia and South Africa given the recent dominance of the European team”

He'll just claim Scottish nationality now and say he won.

Maybe the relative success of the Europeans over the years in contrast to the US, given that the US generally has the better players overall, is down to the fact that it doesn't mean as much to them as the Europeans (the Europeans being the underdogs and with seemingly more bonding), although it clearly matters to the US fans.

We won the Ryder Cup largely because Donald out-captained Bradley. I used to think that Ryder Cup captaincy was over-rated, but as with 2 years ago, Donald & his team put a huge amount of thought & analysis into foursomes pairings - what ball do the players use, are they left to right or right to left players, are they better drivers or putters. He would tell the partnerships who was taking the odd holes & who was driving at the evens and why. It seems Bradley simply went with gut instinct & tried to put mates together. We massively outperformed the US in the foursomes & fourballs, which gave us just enough of a lead to withstand traditional US strength in the singles.

Question for those more familiar with the Ryder cup format (I could probably google it), on the singles does each captain submit their order 1-12 (1-11 in yesterdays case) and who they're matched up against is simply pot luck depending on what the other team submitted?

Or are there rules to it? I heard Luke Donald say something along the lines of 'we thought they would put their strongest out first' which suggests its the former.

Yes, that's exactly how it works. They have no idea what the opposition order is. It's considered an honour to play the first match, lead out the team.

Thank you.

Would've thought we might have put a few of the bigger hitters lower down the order in that case given the lead we had with a couple of sacrificial lambs early doors. Easy to say in hindsight though and got over the line in the end.

No, with so few points needed, it made sense to put the bigger hitters at the top, while USA were likely to do the same. It initially worked too, with Europe leading in most of the top matches through the early holes. Kind of unfortunate that the Americans won the first 2 games 1up though holing lengthy birdie putts on 18.

Yeah fair point, I guess if 1 or 2 of those first few matches had gone our way that would've killed the crowd off early and taken a bit of pressure off those that followed.

Did I hear that they used VR to simulate playing in front of a hostile crowd too? It sounds as though there was a level of professionalism from Donald that Bradley just didn't get anywhere near.

I've always though some extra spice could be added by having players pick their opponents, each team choosing alternately.

Typical of people on here, you just cant help yourselves when it comes to turning anything into a political statement. Just enjoy the Sport, it was a superb event & real edge of the seat stuff yesterday when the Americans came fighting back.

The Hovland injury therefore withdrawal actually helped us as we got half a point from that, that must be a ruling as I doubt the US would have agreed to that knowing the situation of the match..

Apologies if your comment is aimed at me. There was a thread about behaviour but that had died a death, so I posted this here.

I suppose I was struck by what Rory McIlroy had to say after the game about what went on, and the behaviour certainly seemed to reach a new low, so I was interested to read what the Telegraph had to say about it.

I have removed it, so hope you will be happy.

They're now objecting to the ruling despite having benefitted from it twice in the past.
Is it just the 24 hour news cycle and the need for 'content' that perpetuates this nonsense (see also a recently rained off football match)?

Sorry DJR, no wasnt aimed at you. Your'e one of the more sensible & intelligent posters, & I read your comments as most are well written & fair. I just tried watching the Ryder Cup, as a Golfer & as a fan. Tried to remove myself from all political rubbish this weekend. There's loads of tripe on FB sports pages for example about the President etc.

Yes I've just seen that, Bradley now saying the ruling must change for the next RC, been in place since 1971 and yes they've used it twice..
