Always remember the old saying "Solicitors only ever have one client. Themselves." .
Dont trust any of them further than you could throw them.
Dont call them up or write to them without need. They will charge you for everything.

Not really helpful right now.

Thanks anyway.

Always used Jackamans for a variety of reasons over the years (Felixstowe branch though often their solicitors are based elsewhere)

sponsor the club too, youd think we'd get a discount :D

fwiw I was very happy with how Ashtons dealt with some of this stuff for us, and it again helps theyre very local so you can go have a direct face to face chat, none of this zoom call nonsense, or constant email ping pong.

certainly alot happier with them than the lot we got to deal with the next time but as that bunch arent local theres no worry youll get lumbered with them, just a reminder sometimes you dont always get to pick the solicitors you want, and Trustpilot/review a solicitor ratings are often very accurate.

Not sure if it would help in your specific case but I used Which Legal for a probate issue. Worked out significantly cheaper than going through a private solicitor

If it's not too complicated a situation you really can do it yourself, even I managed for my Dad!

I did it for my dad too.
I found it really complicated to be honest and there were many times I regetted taking it on.
I even somehow managed to over pay inheritance tax by almost £50k!!!
I did get it back ok but it took ages.
That said, in the end I did get it all sorted and it was a sigh of relief when everything was finalised.
My advice is to read every bit of guidance twice. Then read it again!!!
But as Banksy says, it is doable. You just need to weigh up if you have the time and energy vs a fairly hefty solicitors bill.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

We used the Co-Op, with very mixed results. They were extremely sloppy to start off with, missed stuff like informing the utilities (which was supposed to be part of the package) - ended up with threats to take deceased mother to court. Think it was just a useless member of staff, because after we complained, they moved the case to a nice and efficient young lady who sorted everything out very quickly after that. They weren't particularly cheap, either.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Gudgeons in Stowmarket are very good.

Not sure if they have an Ipswich office though.

If assets are left by a surviving spouse to descendants, and the assets include the family home, it is possible for up to £1 million of assets to be free from inheritance tax.

The following is a useful link which contains a tool which indicates whether inheritance tax is due. It also sets out when details needs to be sent.

Sadly that's not the case - it's my maiden aunt so no qualifying relatives for anything to be left to.

Doubly galling since her brother died a couple of years back (also unmarried and no kids) and left her his bungalow. Thanks to the size of his estate, and lack of relief, it got IHTed at full whack, and now HMRC will get to have another go at it.

In a little under three years, they'll have helped themselves to almost the entire value of the place.

The rules desperately need bringing into the 21st century, especially now that more and more people are choosing not to have children.

Sorry about that. But the advice stands not to contact them without good cause. They will charge heavily for every letter and phone call.

I've often thought the rules for unmarried and childless siblings, who might live in the same house, were a bit unfair.

The same would have been true for gay couples at one time but they now have the marriage/civil partnership option.

If you need tax advice, double check that the solicitors are able and qualified to offer it. My solicitors wouldn’t touch tax and in the end it felt like I’d spent a fortune for pretty much nothing (certainly no expert advice). I had to bring an accountant and in hindsight wish I’d not involved a solicitor.

When my Father died I did the probate myself as everything passed to my Mother and it was a pretty simple exercise. When she died, as one of those inheriting I didn’t really want to handle probate myself so used Kerseys, who had been my parent’s solicitors and who had held their wills. They’ve handled everything fine but boy has it been costly.
