Luckily I miss all that rubbish by not being on those sort of platforms. But I also miss the useful things social media can provide too. We’ve just unleashed social media on people without really thinking about the impacts. I’m not sure what can be done if people chose to consume this sort of material, but something needs to be done.

I've come off X and Facebook, they'd both become absolute cesspits in recent years. I don't miss either of them one bit.

Royrry - i genuinely don’t understand why you mark this down (i.e. disagree with it)
I say the events are wrong, an eye for an eye is wrong, conflating Israeli with Jewishness is wrong.
Im assuming you agree with that, though perhaps not.

I then call out the Israeli Govt for at every opportunity conflating Israel and Jewishness. They do this to stifle criticism. Is it this point you disagree with?

It was my post you were replying to and I didn’t see anything wrong with what you said. It was only a general hypothetical, and yes people can be pushed over the edge and do stupid/evil stuff after suffering a traumatic incident. It’s best not to hypothesise specifically in the absence of information, but I didn’t think you were making a strong case to do that.

We’ll find out what the motivation was in due course I suppose. Things may already have moved on and I’ve missed them, as I’ve been busy for the last few hours.

And more than likely British nationals not Israeli, assuming all British Jews are Israeli, or supporters of Israel is racist in itself.

My view is that regarding Israeli Jews as collectively responsible for the actions of the state of Israeli is antisemitic too.

Quite.

Yes it’s technically a democracy, but the balance of power being such a fine margin that it’s a handful of fundamentalist extremists holding the rest over a barrel to operate their policies, which highlights that Netanyahu’s government is only supported by half the population, if that.

Showing an image so soon of the “suspected/alleged” dead perpetrator is new I think ? I’m lost track of the UK guidelines nowadays but I think this may stem from earlier events this year ?
I presume the police marksmen ALWAYS have a default investigation when there is a death, which is right and correct for many reasons but I hope they aren’t vilified unnecessarily.

Terrible news, this sort of thing shouldn't be happening in 2025. It worries me how much hate is being whipped up these days, including by mainstream politicians. We need to dial everything down a few notches.

Regardless of the liklihood of people suggesting this is whataboutery, it really isn't. Today’s events have been appalling. This is purely to highlight the toxic environment we are living in...

'Blackburn MP’s baby was target of ‘depraved’ online abuse hours after being born
Independent Adnan Hussain says racist and sexist posts expose ‘dark abyss of hatred and despair’ in UK being left to grow unchecked

The newborn daughter of a British MP was the target of “utterly depraved” and sexist online abuse hours after her birth, her father has told the Guardian.

The independent MP Adnan Hussain, who won his Blackburn seat in 2024 running on a pro-Gaza stance, said he and his newborn were subject to “vile” abuse after he posted a pixelated picture of her on X.

“Day by day, the atmosphere around us is darkening, be that online or out on the streets, and maybe even workplaces,” he said, pointing to recent stories of people being harassed and attacked on racial grounds, including a rape in the West Midlands that police are treating as racially motivated. “The hatred those in positions of leadership and power are allowing to fester and go unchecked is having very real, very dangerous, real-world consequences.”

It’s a fair point regarding the extremists, but I’d be horribly concerned if Netanyahu’s government was still supported by anywhere near half of the Israeli population.

So would I be (don't have the actual figures, will look up later when have time) - but I was replying specifically to DJR's point that it's wrong to collectively blame the entire population for Netanyahu's monstrous behaviours when a) many didn't vote for him and b) by now even many of those who did vote for him have stopped supporting him; or indeed may now actively oppose him.

‘X’ again. It would be interesting to see data on which platforms the most abuse comes from. Every time I read a report about online abuse it’s involving X. We could stop a lot of the impact of this ourselves if we wanted to by not using X. MPs should certainly have more sense than to be on there. It’s not a benign site any more. I can see why Musk bought it now despite it being a bad business move - its use now is to amplify the racism and other far right material that aligns with his own views. TikTok is next up, with the proposed purchase by Musk’s buddy Larry Ellison.

Sorry, but I think it's just as wrong to generalise about X as anything else.

You yourself have thanked me for, & endorsed posts I've shared on here from that platform, from people like @EuropeanPowell, who almost single-handedly posts & disseminates valuable information about the scandal that are Freeports, SEZs etc., promoting understanding of the issue.

See also posts like the photo of a chimp thanking Jane Goodall posted by NthQld. today on here, thousands of other feelgood photos of animals, nature, art, music, sport etc. Not to mention thousands of posts disseminating good politics, green politics etc etc. on there.

But surely there comes a tipping point where so much of the content on X is toxic that you can no longer defend it? At what point does the platform overall become so problematic that by continuing to use it (and thus support it) you're contributing to the problem?

I don't post much on there now, as it undoubtedly has gone downhill with musk, but I genuinely don't see any of the toxic cr@p, because none of the 1,800 approx accounts I follow post any such stuff; & I very rarely look at hashtags these days.

If I could quickly find, have time to get used to + find as good accounts to follow on a better platform I would - but I don't. Took me 5+ years to get to a good stage on there where I knew who/what to follow and who/what to avoid at all costs.

Not saying a tipping point will never come though.

*Edit - and as for “contributing to the problem”, I refute that entirely - in fact would argue the opposite, ie the more decent people stay on there to counter the cr@p, the less toxic the place will be.

Social media is shite, look who is running it. Not sure why you are being dug out though Rorry. Unfortunately there’s an issue of extremism and the Manchester Areana bombing shows it’s not just about Palestine. No one should live in fear of their life for going about their life, or for the religion they follow.

I’m not a religious person I think it’s nonsense, just be a decent person it’s madness these things are happening when we’ve left this planet (science FTW). I always think of Germany, some of the best people I’ve met, Russia kept some of Europe - life is too short

That point is still a long way from being reached...you might like to think it’s majorly toxic but theres way more good stuff on there than bad, certainly in what I look at.
