“16 years, you’ll never sing that” 19:51 - Oct 5 with 3182 viewsMullet

Quite right we won’t - that moment encapsulated the gulf in class between us and them as fans, as people, as the pride of Anglia. Even if the class between the two teams wasn’t as evident as it could have been today.

Cantering past them, whilst making some poor choices and plenty of unforced errors was showing just how much better we can and should be once we get going. All they had was a deflected goal and a determination to drag the game into the darkest and artless places akin to their withered little hearts.

Liam Manning does not deserve a squad so poor, or fans so delusional and entitled. Believing they should always be in promotion contention as they ossify, and spend money on competition winners of the wrong sort; is the sort of hubris and karma they deserve. That bloke at the back and the one they brought on, on the right were cart horses not fit to share the grass with those wearing the Suffolk Punch.

Whilst Kipre claimed the opener and what must now be his shirt to lose, seeing him pray before kickoff and again after scoring made me think today was as much destiny as it was inevitable. When philogene scored me and the bloke next to me stopped our celebrations and turned to exchange a look of “how the fudge did he do that?” - give him the ballon d’or, a new contract, the freedom of the town, whatever his mad bastard agent desires.

Whilst Kipre claimed motm it was Matusiwa for me. So many clever interventions, redirecting the ball with one touch to send us on our way, he and Cajuste when they work just run things don’t they?

You could go through every player and talk about those who grafted, those who drifted etc but I felt for Azon. What does he have to do to get a goal? If I’m being picky, the subs deserved to have ten mins more today in my book. The circus around their star player being a bench option for us was always going to be funny, especially at full time, and Clarke moving from Currie to Reuser territory is delightful, but for all of Hirsts work rate his lack of hold up play might see him need to do more to keep the starting spot from the hungry Spaniard.

It’s nice to think the poster printers of Norwich will have fallen on hard times this week, but I’m more pleased we overcame a poor team who defended deep and narrow and looked to spoil a game they couldn’t win. Relegation beckons on current eye tests and we won’t need to worry about that for a year or so.

How nice it is to have a sore throat, a belly full of service station food and a sense of contentment after a visit to the only cathedral that matters in East Anglia.

Uppa Town.

Indeed, so much more we could have done today and yet it felt only a matter of time before we scored for most of that game. Getting the third goal earlier might have helped us all relax a bit though, always a nagging doubt until that point.

Agree on Matusiwa but then you know that given our post-match debrief.

The only concern for me today was not knowing when to play the ball at the back, Furlong and O’Shea got themselves into trouble too often for my liking. Some risk is acceptable but we didn’t have the balance right on that side.

And we are STILL ahead of them in the overall head to head.

They have nothing, absolutely nothing on us. Today meant a lot for that reason, it’s obviously long overdue and it’s been awful at times in games against them (although plenty of them were draws), but we’re streets ahead of them now, and, with football the way it is, odds are we’re going to be for some time. They didn’t exactly capitalise on their “domination” did they!

That was laughably embarrassing. Imagine as a football club you have a rival side who has punched above its weight historically, Champions of England, FA Cup winners, UEFA cup winners and they’re currently sticking 3 past you in 3rd gear, and your attempt of a flex is a period of ‘dominance’ that’s yielded 3 wins in the last 10 years.

I thought the 16 year thing was a bit tongue in cheek, turns out it’s actually a thing. ‘You’ll never sing that’ feck me, they’re not wrong about that bit to be fair. Properly, properly tragic. Almost feel a bit sorry for them at this stage, they’ve literally got nothing left.

No, they take it incredibly seriously. It’s proper weird, and makes zero sense. I assume we are now 2 years into trying to beat it by their logic?

A quick sojourn onto twitter and the timeline is flooded with them lamenting its passing etc. I could understand if they’d beaten us at Wembley or something, but being sat right next to them in the churchmans I was amazed how weird and quiet they were.

The bloke holding up the vandalised Nunez shirt being a particular highlight.

Innit. After today’s win we’ve actually beaten them as many times as they’ve beaten us in the past 6.5 years. But, yeah, ‘dominance’. Not that we should be surprised, they have anniversary celebrations for a UEFA cup 2nd round win after all. Proper tinpot.

Norwich haven't beaten us for two and a half years, precisely.

They're so absurd that when having their highest league finish (3rd) they in fact ended the season with a negative goal difference. No need for reference it's just one thing that's been documented throughout time, as our biggest rivals it's in plain sight to some fans.

No NCFC team will ever be Champions of their country, and while it's feasible an FA Cup victory could arrive at some timeline or another it's highly improbable no NCFC team will ever see victory in a European Final either. Not only that they can't and never can provide two of the most successful and decorated team coaches to the national squad unlike ourselves.

Really don’t like how so much media has leant into this 16 years thing and legitimising it. They should be having the piss ripped out of them for it.

Gone now and it's an irrelevance to everyone but them.

Those play off game against them hurt but we knew they were so much better than us, so it hurt in a way where I was just expecting it to happen. We went into those games with a Mick M squad pieced together on a tiny budget.

They know we'll take the opportunity that they failed miserably to do.

We only actually played them in 6 seasons didn't we across those 16 years? Is that right or am I wrong?
Did we play just 14 times in 16 years? And 4 of those games were in a single season.
Fair play to Norwich for that run. However, it makes it sound like we've been getting whooped for 16 years consecutively which is being rather economical with the truth.
To be fair, we've more than had our moments, especially in the top flight where our head to head is far superior.
Yes, Norwich racked up 8 wins with something like a +17 goal difference during those 14 Championship fixtures (between 2010 and 2025). We could compare that to Ipswich's dominant spell from 1977-1981: 7 wins with something like a +15 goal difference over just 12 matches—and crucially, 10 of those 12 games were in League Division One, England's top tier.
Anyway, it’s fair to say we’ve both had our moments in the sun!
The overall head-to-head record is virtually identical (we’re only 1 win ahead), so either side of the EA divide can spin it however they like. But in truth, when you take a step back, there really isn’t all that much between us, certainly not as much as either side might like to claim!

I think that team cost just £10,000 in transfer fees, was it Tyrone Mings for £10k? Later that season, we signed Freddie Sears for £100k, bringing the squad’s total transfer spend to just £110k. The rest were either free transfers or loan signings! We were truly shopping in football’s bargain basement. This wasn’t a clash of two clubs at their peak; it was Norwich, likely with some Premier League experience sprinkled in, against an Ipswich side built entirely on a shoestring.

I held my nose and dived into the Pink'Un podcast last night, their equivalent of KOA. The despondency around the club is hilarious from a purely partisan POV but it struck me how much it reminded me of the Evans/post-Keane era here.

With my blue-tinted glasses on it's great but actually, from a wider perspective it's a shame that, unlike various points in the past, East Anglia can't boast two top tier teams when there's so little competition across the region.

Whatever the hell's going on over the border, I'm bloody glad we escaped that cycle but can't help feeling it'd be more interesting if we were playing out this rivalry in the PL again. It really brought home to me how far we've come in such a short time and how precarious the tightrope is.

I'm not a big enough man to feel sorry for their fans, but I do feel sorry for Liam Manning, having seen his post match interview this morning. I don't mean that as a dig, I do genuinely feel sorry for him as a former Town youth player and seemingly decent bloke who has such a poor squad to work with in what looks like such a difficult environment where there's still a very unrealistic false air of what tends to be called entitlement and very little time before the fans turn on the latest manager.

Again, I don't mean any of that as a dig.

Genuinely have no pity for any of them. This “16 years” crap is predicated on ignoring our worst ever era and that both clubs were in league one and the Prem without the other.

I wish them nothing but misery, ruin and the clap.

If they drop down through the leagues and we never play them again I’d be happy with that. They don’t deserve a club, respect or a sense of parity with us.
