E bikes 10:28 - Oct 6 with 662 views | Axeldalai_lama | Random tangent away from the magnificent derby win but... Are car drivers now supposed to assume that all push bikes are suped up e-bikes around junctions, up hills etc? I know you have to judge all vehicles speed etc and allow accordingly and all of that, but it seems a difficult area now, and e-bikes flying up hills and at times and speeds where normal bikes could be anticipated a certain way seems to create so many near misses and difficulties. Equally treating every normal bike like it could be doing 30mph up a hill or in whatever situation would cause traffic carnage.
E bikes on 10:32 - Oct 6 with 641 views | Swansea_Blue | It's an issue innit. Add in that e-bikes have opened up cycling to people who aren't familiar with riding a bike in traffic and it's a poor mix. In short, yes it's probably best to assume people are going quicker on bikes than you'd expect. You can often tell from the kit they're in. The lycra lot are more likely to be on a normal bike, but that's a lot to look out for.

E bikes on 10:35 - Oct 6 with 614 views | tonybied | I just assume that all other road users are either out to try and kill me, or out to try and kill themselves, regardless of what kind of vehicle they are in control (or not!) of. It serves me fairly well with the standard of road use out there nowadays!
E bikes on 10:36 - Oct 6 with 614 views | belgablue | All the legal ones are limited to 15mph - any going faster are illegal (or the rider is naturally riding very fast, unlikely). Over here any that go above 26kmh need a number plate

Yeah, all good points. I think I'm a bit annoyed at myself for being shouted at, and getting angry at one. It's that new issue of, yes, being my fault because I have to judge the road etc, but also an e-biker going flat out up hills and across busy junctions etc isn't the cleverest idea however previously technically correct it is. More thought all round needed, definitely including myself in that too.
E bikes on 10:45 - Oct 6 with 554 views | suffolkpoker | tbh i hate all cycling on the road. I dont like how they dont have number plates, insurance and tend have there own road rules. It should be agaisnt the law for a bike to be on the road if there is a cycle lane on the same road. They deem the road a better surface and dont use it. Then you have the lyrca lot in row and wont go single file and make cars wait... the arrogance annoys me!

Living in the Cambridge area I agree totally. However, the ones who need picking up by police before they cause an accident or get themselves killed are the idiots on (illegal) e scooters. They're mostly ridden by kids in unbranded black clothes: unfortunately I've been reliably informed that's the way they avoid CCTV recognition for their other jobs (phone snatching or "running" for dealers).

Advice is to ride 2 abrest - as it makes it easier for cars to over take. Means a shorter distance to pass (when over taking) It also means the impatient driver (who might be tempted to squeeze through when it's not safe) is forced to wait until it's safe to pass. (Don't blame me - that's the traffic plod advice)

As someone who commutes on a bike fairly regularly, I can't stand drivers who deliberately block cycle lanes, whizz past with only a few CMs gap because they can't wait 30 secs for an opening, and have no understanding of the highway code when it comes to riding two abreast But hey ho | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I'm impressed you have the cheek to damn all cyclists with the same brush, demand they get off the roads so you can drive unimpeded and then call them arrogant.

Most of those points are addressed in the Highway Code, as there are already separate considerations for cyclists. And that includes cycling side by side. Given we’re supposed to effectively give cyclists as much space as a car when overtaking, I prefer it when they bunch up two or even three wide - it’s a lot quicker and easier to overtake than if there’s a string of them. They do also need to be considerate of course, and unfortunately some aren’t (just as with all road users). We have an issue with cyclists for some reason. I much prefer cycling in France, as even though they can by nutters behind the wheel they’re much more patient and tolerant around cyclists. Being both a cyclist and car user, cyclists don’t bother me. I know they’re likely to be knackered and know what it feels like to have arseholes clip you as they try and squeeze past. All I have to do in a car is wiggle a foot to go slower or quicker. I can do that easier than them changing speed and it does’t matter if I have to wait a few seconds. Congestion and things like traffic lights have a far bigger impact on journey times. [Post edited 6 Oct 16:30]

I'm an occasional cycle commuter (I prefer to walk) but the ones that really get my goat are the e-bike riders doing it for profit whilst breaking all sorts of laws in the process. The government has allowed delivery of food and other goods to become the preserve of lunatics on mountain bikes with dodgy motor set ups, no lights and little regard for anyone else's safety. As far as I'm aware, it's still illegal to ride a push bike on the pavement and yet it seems OK to ride something as heavy and fast as a motorbike there. You can't run any other business like this. It's beyond time it was addressed.

That’s fair enough and I’d agree. You get them around here pelting along pavements sometimes. Same with the red light jumpers. There are certainly a lot of people on bikes and e-bikes who think the rules don’t apply to them. The worst around here are teenagers on e-scooters, they’re a menace.

E bikes on 18:56 - Oct 6 with 213 views | Mark | We should do all we can to encourage proper cycling, as it is great for fitness and the environment. It is those illegal modified bikes which should be confiscated and riders fined. People are effectively riding electric motorbikes with no licence, insurance, number plate or helmet. Also, people riding any bikes with no lights in the dark should be dealt with, especially when dressed all in black. They are lucky they don't get injured or killed. [Post edited 6 Oct 18:58]

Coupled with the fact that some pop wheelies on streets and crowded pavements, with no regard for the elderly and disabled.
