I'm glad we're shopping in the Dutch market again.... 15:58 - Oct 11 with 1519 viewsThatMuhrenCross

Ipswich Town seems to have an affinity with Dutch players. It makes sense given that the next professional clubs east of us are indeed playing in the Eredivisie.

I read an article in the EADT today reflecting on the Dutch stars of the past, and whilst you automatically think of the likes of Thijssen, Reuser and Muhren - club legends - there's a sense of nostalgia thinking back even to the likes of Bobby Petta, Gianni Zuiverloon and Pim Balkestein.

Then there is our love of orange. Every few seasons we rock up with an orange away or third kit - a nod to our rich history with players of the old Oranje.

The fact is, the Dutch league produces exciting technical players that suit what Ipswich Town are trying to do at the moment. Players very capable of playing out from the back in the way McKenna demands.

It's safe to say that Matusiwa (albeit via the French leagues) has been an absolute revelation, and will likely go down us on of our better Dutch signings when we look back in years to come.

Even Akpom, who himself is English, but has come from Ajax brings that warm fuzzy feeling whenever we sign someone from the Netherlands.

I just hope that our scouting network is once again paying serious attention to the Eredivisie, and that in the next few windows we'll see some more gems crossing the North Sea.

Cant believe Balkestein got a mention and Reuser didn't! EDIT: turn out I can't read 😂

After reading this, I'm definitely going to wear my orange town kit today.

Fortunately for Marco Holster they didn’t mention Grimsby.

I'm not certain that Zuiverloon is even up to footnote status, to be honest, but the rest of those that you mention all have a place as club legends, fan favourites or have some affection for some reason or another.

Zondervan is another one that needs mentioning - a full Dutch international, began and ended his career in the Netherlands, Ipswich player of the year in 1987 and played a good couple of hundred times for us. Granted he wasn't born in the Netherlands, but he definitely counts as one of our legendary Dutch contingent.

Imagine if we could wheel Reuser out for freekick duties now? There was a period when he just couldn't miss!

I'm not sure where they got "Both made close to 400 appearances for the Blues" from? I didn't think either were here anywhere near long enough for that, and according to Wikipedia, Muhren made 161 and Thijssen 125 appearances for us.
