This whole 'we've got better support than you' is so boring. They're currently experiencing what we were experiencing 7/8 years ago. We clearly have more fans than them, because we've been more successful in our history than them, so we've picked up plenty of fans from all over the UK. |  |

This whole 'we've got better support than you' is so boring. They're currently experiencing what we were experiencing 7/8 years ago. We clearly have more fans than them, because we've been more successful in our history than them, so we've picked up plenty of fans from all over the UK. |
That said we 20 odd years outside the PL, it takes time to rekindle and revistalise that base
It will interesting to see how much higher those crowds can go with a larger stadium | |

I genuinely believe that we will have had fans that started supporting the club during the glory days of the 70's/80's that then gave up making the effort to watch our games during the Evans era, because it was so depressing.
You'd presume the majority of Norwich fans are from the Norfolk area, because, why the hell would you support them, unless they're your local team?

I think I read somewhere that they had 24k for their last home game, and that's 24k counting ALL season ticket holders whether they attend or not. They were saying the actual attendance would have been significantly lower. I wonder if they'll go under 20k this season (in real terms)? |  |

I’m not sure it was quite as simple as that. Crowds during Robson’s time varied enormously. In to the 30k’s for some big games, down to a heck of a lot less for a rainy Tuesday night v somebody no good. That’s the impact of standing and pay on the gate.
When the team broke up, a lot of the floating support didn’t bother going. Context: it was the time of Hysel, Valley Parade fire and Hillsborough, violence and decaying grounds in addition to poor football. Until Italia 90 apathy ruled everywhere. In Lyall’s promotion season of 92 core support was well under 10k and gradually improved after Christmas as people realised there was a good team there.
Even the pivotal (and terrific) 3-2 game against Newcastle on a sunny day attracted only 20k in a stadium that could hold 26k - and 20k was thought to be excellent at the time.
Under Burley, the ground was rarely full, even with a capacity of 20k, until Wembley 2000. It was never too hard to get a ticket. After that time attendances increased. Core support? Up to 16k? Evidence? What they fell to under the depressing regime of dead hand Evans. Watching the club rot away was no fun.
Core support now? 20k? Maybe a bit more. That reflects renewal, optimism, the way football is (a lot of clubs attendances have grown) and population growth. So what should the capacity be? To accommodate all who want to see games, free tickets for children, fewer restricted views and more comfort including legroom, I think 35k is sufficient. Maybe a little more but the last thing needed is an empty MK Dons stadium.
Yes, it’s a bit different for Norwich. Their support is from a truly remote local area and of course they’re all related. A single family day out, bit like a picnic in the old days. [Post edited 13 Oct 8:58]

From memory, when they originally got promoted,and we got relegated ( 2002?), we had the higher attendances for 4 years, despite our financial troubles and them being in a higher division, where coincidentally they didnt beat us in any of that time! |  |

I’d like to think this is just normality reasserting itself. We were always the better/bigger side ‘back in the day’. And then we had an Evans problem which saw fortunes reversed. Hopefully we won’t have an owner as useless/clueless/disinterested as Evans again, so we’ll cement our rightful place as the Pride of Anglia. But who knows. If we knew it would be boring wouldn’t it? |  |

It's about the Wortington era onwards their crowds started to hit the modern levels and that came off the back of a lot of work to recover the crowds, kids for a quid etc etc
At one point, something like 60% of all their tickets were discounted | |
