Curious case with him now. What happened with his career? Similar to Bonne in. Many ways. Was never completely convinced by him but you can't say he didn't contribute to our L1 promotion and scored a decent few goals.

Ever since he left he just completely lost the ability to score goals. A free agent now you would have thought he could easily get a L1 free agent move but seemingly not.

Remember him joining in the champ promotion party and was clearly a popular part of the group.

Good luck Freddie and hope he can get a good move for himself and get his mojo back.

Maybe KM simply gets the very best from some players and other managers fail to do so.

Definitely an element of that but then he didn't with Bonne really.

I think McKenna has always been about attributes for roles. Freddie never looked quite the quality bit he fitted the system. McKenna also got a hell of a lot out of Jackson!

Could argue Hirst is like a better version in that he fits what we need in terms of pressing, decent speed and brings others into play. But not the finished article in terms of touch etc. You could imagine a scenario that Hirst moved on and struggled for game time somewhere like when he went to blackburn. That said Hirst still has loads of unlocked potential and hopefully he can take his game to another level like a Daryl Murphy.

He was never a goal scorer. He was 26 before he scored more than 2 goals for a club and that was in the semi-pro Isthmian league. He played hardly any football before then. Credit to him for then stepping up to L1 for a few years, but his season with us was pretty much as good as it got for him.

He won promotion with Rotherham and scored a few in the champ with them. So his last few years between us and Rotherham were good for him.

Trouble is, the team are better than the sum of the different parts. Look at Chappers. He's hardly pulling up trees at Pompey. Same for Burgess at Swansea. Luke Woolfenden can't get a start at Coventry for love nor money. Broady is just an eternal sub for Wrexham, although has scored a few as well.

Combined, those four were probably equally the catalysts for our promotions from League One and the Championship.

The only one I slightly disagree with (and it's not the fact he can't get a starting spot) is that Cov are flying, he's gone to an established team and it was always going to be tough. He will come good.

I think sometimes it just clicks, right manager, right attitudes from the players, similar personalities.. not many who have left under McKenna have gone on to better things.. he definitely got the best out of them all.

Most of freddy's goals were literally handed to him on a plate, due to our good play in around the goal area ,or he just happened to be in the right place at the right time..no doubt mckennas type of system made some of these players look good

Chappers has only been at Pompey a few games and one of them he couldn't play because was against us. You can't judge Chappers at Pompey just yet. He's playing football.

Broady got unlucky with an injury but has generally done well for Wrexham and will be an important player for them.

Indeed, you are right but I'd say that Woolfy will probably be the one that will thrive.

He had roughly a 1 in 3 strike rate across six seasons, even with lower numbers in his 2 Championship seasons. Granted, some seasons he played less too. But he had a good strikerate at 3 clubs in a row. I think it is more that he was a good League One striker in his prime and he is past his best.

There’s no such thing as goals handed on a plate or ‘happened to be in the right place at the right time’. It’s a highly prized skill good strikers have or learn. If you write off goals in that way, where does that leave the best exponents of it like Lineker?

Between 2018 at Plymouth and 2024 here (age 25-31), Freddy was a 1 in 3 player, more or less. He was decent, did well for us and better than some gave him credit for. A good character too.

I wish him well.
