Middlesbrough thoughts. 21:05 - Oct 19 with 2002 viewsSitfcB

Appreciate it’s probably all be said and done but I tortured myself tonight and flicked through the game as if a Sunday evening isn’t depressing enough.

As I thought at the time in the ground the first 20 minutes were good from us and then we let them into it.

I do think VAR would give that handball as a penalty but there we go.

Palmer then kept us in it after a mad spell, a couple of really good saves amongst it.

Thought the Szmodics chance was just dipping in from my view before being slung away from a good bit of defending ffs.

At the time I thought Hirst’s penalty was really poor, but watching it back it can be said it’s actually quite a good save from the ‘keeper but at the same time can be said it wasn’t powerful enough and GH gave the game away with what side he was going. If he scores then it’s a different game which we probably go on to win.

Davis really weak for the first goal and less said about Kipre the better. If we stopped that it’s a different game once again.

Literally conceded on the 46th minute, gutting.

For the second thought Palmer could’ve maybe have done better with pushing that ball out but didn’t have much choice really with Conway ready to tap home.

We didn’t really do anything before that second goal, or after it, yes Dara pulled one back for us and you’re thinking here we go but it never really came, a bit of a damp squib, passing it about with a couple of minutes to go when we just need to get it up there, dear me.

But overall I don’t think it was a poor performance per se, just another one of those were with all the attacking intent we didn’t really touch them as much as we should have.

Walking away from the ground a couple of Boro fans said we were the best side they’ve seen there so far this season, but don’t think we’re up against much competition. They thought we were going to nick a draw towards the end and were pleased to see it out.

The away end was pretty decent and loud up to HT really, a great turnout had to be said.

Saw a few TWTD’ers, past and present, as per and even met a new one as well

Two home games this week and two wins will pop this one out of the memory.

I think it's fair to say that Boro had the better chances overall. But I think your assessment is broadly fair and right Sitters.

Yup, the fact that some Boro fans thought we were the best they’d faced so far, says it all really.

I live in Bristol and had the same comments from some City fans after the draw at Ashton Gate.

Maybe we don’t see what they do, or it’s just a very poor quality league this time round, but if we can get something approaching momentum going, stop conceding awful goals every game, we’re possibly still good for a top 2 finish.

Six points come 2.30 on Saturday will certainly help, but I’m resigned to the fact we won’t keep clean sheets in either of those games, so we’re going to need to be far more clinical when we do create chances.

Huge week for KM because it hasn’t been good enough so far and every coach in this division will have noted just how easy we are to get at and disrupt.

I was at the game. Firstly Fair play to Boro who made the most of the match.

Is it too simplistic to say that if that game has VAR we get an earlier penalty and a Boro goal chalked off. 99/100 Kipre clears the ball instead of scores their other goal. Its fine margins and I am sure we will get there and I am totally convinced that there is much more to come from this team.

Once the season finds its natural rhythm and our competitors squads weaken through the attrition of suspensions and injuries I do feel our squad depth will pay off.

Also I do buy Mckenna's lived experience for the squad cohesion comments especially in an away game context.

That was just my way of saying I thought it was handball haha I do much prefer not having VAR and will always be against it.

Not sure about why Boro would’ve had a goal chalked off? Assume you mean the second one, was onside no question IMO.

Yeah, largely agree I think. Especially after the second goal, we never pressed much at all for some reason.

Most infuriating thing was right at the end when Furlong was messing around instead of just going for the long throw.

If I were a Boro fan I would be very disappointed if Boro had not won. They deserved the win.

That said, if we had scored the penalty, we should have at least drawn and quite possibly won.

We defended poorly and relied on Palmer too much. Boro are a very good side doing well and stopped us for much of the game.

After an international break, under the lights away at Middlesbrough, I am not surprised we lost. Had we won, I would have been very confident we are on track to compete at the top. As it stands, I want to see us go on a winning run against those teams that are not at the top. That's what got us promoted last time - winning consistently against those lower teams.

Agree with most of what you have said but I've yet to re watch the game on TV. Can't face it.

Nice to see you as usual Sitters.

its gone now but the still frame on the highlights suggests its very tight.

But I agree with all on here. Boro deserved the win overall.

We need to do better and I am sure we will.

"Davis really weak for the first goal and less said about Kipre the better. If we stopped that it’s a different game once again."

The really telling part came before I think, just a complete absence of pressure on the ball; had we got that bit right neither of the other bits are relevant.

The combination of the penalty miss and the timing of that goal colour the narrative of the first half which was good and could have been 2-2 easily. The second half was poor from us, I thought DOS was probably the only outfield player who stepped up a bit, far too many below-par performances elsewhere.

Thought at the time (with the advantage of replays on TV) that, while Kipre was unfortunate to be completely wrong-footed by the deflection, he perhaps ought to have been moving towards the incoming ball to welly it into the stands. May have been easier to adjust and at least a strong boot might have sent the ball more forwards than sideways, thus missing the goal.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I thought the first 20 minutes was comfortable for both teams as both were cautiously sizing eachother up, then we were decent for a bit and then they caught fire and had us in all sorts of trouble.
I still think it is a poor penalty. I do not trust short run ups and the only way of putting it to the keeper's left is if he opens his body up and side foots it. But on such a short run up it is near impossible so as you say he signalled it and did not either keep it low or high enough to evade the keeper's dive. It is not as if the shot is bang in the corner. He read it, made up his mind and went hard. Credit to the keeper, but it wasn't a hard save. I was praying Hirst would knock it down the middle.
Kipre will be remembered for ever now. Derby goal followed by comical (to a neutral) own goal.
Palmer was at absolute full stretch for that dive at the ball and did as much as he could do. As usual our defence does not read these situations as well as the attackers.
I thought we were uninventive and lacked energy and poor a lot of the time. At 2-1 we just did not go at them and put the under real pressure. Baffling. I did not think Middlesborough apart from acouple of 10 minute spells were anything other than solid and hardworking. Hackney was the difference between the sides.

Did not realize it was deflected. Glad he did it this game and not the last game. That would have gone down in Derby folklore. Still very cumbersome attempt at a clearance.

It’s a little harsh on Kipre, there’s a slight deflection before it reaches him and I feel he’s setting himself for that initial delivery, but it was too quick for him to adjust his feet.

Not really sure what else Palmer could’ve done for their 2nd, I feel has to go for the ball, he’s then relying on our defenders to help him out but they stood around and watched Whittaker put it home unchallenged.

I do feel performances are far from convincing, we don’t look great defensively. For all these players we bought to supposedly do a job in the Championship it’s not that great at this point in time. IMHO, we aren’t good enough or consistent enough to finish top 2. That away record makes poor reading, but it is still early days.
