Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters were banned from watching their game against Aston Villa after police intelligence concluded the biggest risk of violence came from extremist fans of the Israeli club.

According to sources, police intelligence said:

Scores of extreme Maccabi fans with a past history of violence and shouting “racist taunts” were expected to travel to the Birmingham game.

Dutch police told their British counterparts that the Maccabi fans had instigated trouble in Amsterdam at a game last year.

They had randomly picked Muslims in Amsterdam to attack. That led to reprisal violence with some Dutch Jews attacked.

A huge Dutch police effort, involving 5,000 officers across three days, was needed to quell the trouble.

A community impact assessment by West Midlands police recorded that some Jewish people wanted the Maccabi fans banned because of the trouble that might ensue if they attended.

Any trouble started by Maccabi fans attending the Birmingham game could lead to reprisals from local people and further trouble.

The process did not consider whether the ban on fans of the Israeli club could be criticised as antisemitic itself or surrendering to antisemitism.

The ban on Maccabi fans was made by Birmingham’s Safety Advisory Group. It was decided after an intelligence assessment was conducted by West Midlands police, shared with the national UK football policing unit.

The UK football policing unit is understood to have backed the conclusions reached by local police.

I was quietly wondering whether the small but predictable group of protagonists on here who peddled a false narrative when this story broke would a) return to correct their earlier misinterpretations; b) not post anything in the hope that it wouldn’t be pointed out to them, or c) double down.

It would appear the strategy was b followed by c. It was never likely to be a.

Shabana Mahmood says a "devastating" review has found intelligence provided by West Midlands Police to support ban on Tel Aviv fans was "exaggerated" or "untrue" - driven by "confirmation bias".

Threat posed by away fans was "overstated" while threat to them was understated.

So who was peddling the false narrative in the end VT?

Now are you going to a) return to correct your earlier misinterpretations; b) not post anything in the hope that it wouldn’t be pointed out to you, or c) double down?

Ha, I wondered if this thread would end up returning in the light of this weeks revelations.

The problem was never the potential for violent or disruptive Tel Aviv fans.

WMP didn't want to admit or deal with the fact there's a big antisemitic element in their own community so they made it all up.

Hoping heads roll. Seems unlikely.

vt aggressively peddling a false narrative - who'd have ever thunk it.

i'm going for b)

also interesting is the op and the guardian's 'police sources'. clearly the police were briefing falsehoods to the press to try and cover up their completely unjustified decision. the chief constable must have approved that press strategy and the attempt to produce a smokescreen of disinformation. every minute without his resignation is a disgrace.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

“The problem was never the potential for violent or disruptive Tel Aviv fans.”

That’s not true (edit - at least I don’t think it is). There was some evidence of violent behaviour from Tel Aviv fans that was considered during the decision making process. That other evidence was exaggerated, or even made up by AI(!), does’t change that.

The whole situation is a politicised sh*tshow. Tel Aviv don’t have a great record but the Israelis have also been subjected to antisemitic attacks. Against a backdrop of rising antisemitism and rising Islamophobia the match could well have been a tinderbox. It’s sickening that we’ve got to this point in football. It’d be lifetime bans for any thugs carrying out politically motivated or sectarian violence at football matches if it was down to me.

that is true. the decision was made without regard to any evidence. the 'evidence' was assembled (made up and distorted) only after the decision had been made. there is no evidence what so ever, including in amsterdam, of maccabi fans engaging in behaviour that was unusual for fans of many other teams - being drunk and rowdy and low level anti-social behaviour. no evidence - excluding all the stuff made up by the wmp - of anything more than that.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Here is a link to the report Mahmood mentioned which suggests that the fault lies with the WMP rather than the SAG.

https://assets.publishing.serv

The controversial nature of the ban meant that WMP had to get their tackle in order. And given the inaccuracies and incompetencies revealed, and Mahmood's loss of confidence in the Chief Constable, it is difficult to see him remaining in post for much longer.

Exactly.

Nobody saying MTA doesn't have a few hoolies - same with most clubs.

But this was never the real concern in this case.

A couple of snippets from the Guardian.

"John Cotton, the Labour leader of Birmingham city council, has said Craig Guildford should resign as chief constable of West Midlands police. In a post on social media, he said:

For the sake of the city and region confidence needs to be restored in the leadership of West Midlands Police, so that lessons can be learned and implemented. I believe that the Chief Constable should stand down so that this vital work can begin at once."

"The last home secretary who said they did not have confidence in a chief constable was David Blunkett. In 2001 he said he no longer had confidence in Paul Whitehouse as Sussex chief constable after a police raid that led to an unarmed man being shot dead. Whitehouse resigned."

No one has said they don't have a racist hooligan element among their fanbase. They are one of dozens of clubs who have been fined by UEAFA for racist chanting, including British clubs Celtic, Rangers and Linfield . Chelsea narrowly escaped a fine by UEFA for anti semitic chanting by their fans, Uefa sanctioned seven of the 24 competing countries at Euro 2024 because of racist or discriminatory behaviour by their fans.

Not sure how your post is relevant to the disgraceful behavior of West Midlands Police chiefs who victim-blamed Jews, lied repeatedly and then attempted a cover up.

It certainly reminds me of policing from the 60s, 70s, 80s where the police made up who was the guilty party and then manipulated/faked the evidence to match their decision.

Although at least the Dutch police told the truth.

He's already retired once then came back into the same role.
It's not that uncommon.
I've never agreed with it. Fire services have been criticised for it too, as some senior fire officers do similar.
You have to have a break of service for 28 days.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.
