| Hurricane Melissa on 17:25 - Oct 27 with 1553 views | Perublue | I was keeping updated on this last night/uk morning so trying to catch up … I believe the biggest problem is the speed of movement and that it’s just going to sit on top of Jamaica for a day or so and the mountain’s area and touristy area so mud slides and economic destruction… the only good thing is the speed of it’s movement re.evacuation | |

The storm is currently only moving at 3 mph which will explain the crazy rainfall predictions of up to 1m in places.

| Hurricane Melissa on 21:48 - Oct 27 with 1275 views | ZapatasMoustache | Yep, huge impact in Cuba too but they have a pretty great response system so hopefully minimal lives lost - that said, impact on people's lives will be awful in what is already a very tough period for them | | | |
| Hurricane Melissa on 23:46 - Oct 27 with 1199 views | Perublue | It’s getting even bigger and slower … this could be catastrophic. | |

Yes, it sounds like landslides in the mountainous area and flooding are going to be the biggest issue. They must be somewhat used to high winds and a bit more resilient, not that 175 mph will be fun.

| Hurricane Melissa on 06:49 - Oct 28 with 1064 views | Steve_M | Yes, but if we stop talking about climate change or recording data won’t it just go away? Less facetiously, my best wishes for those in the path of it. | |

Their Prime Minister just said, there are no buildings in Jamaica that could withstand a cat. 5 storm. Sounds like this could be absolutely devastating. [Post edited 28 Oct 7:15]

That’s a surprise. It’s going to be grim on all fronts then. Is is supposed to be making landfall this morning our time or there’s do you know?

Cheers. So about 1 pm for us then and then taking the afternoon to move across to Kingston. They’re really preparing for the worst aren’t they based on those comments. Fingers crossed for them. I find it morbidly fascinating from this distance, and despite not wishing it on anyone part of me would even like to experience it; I’m not sure what that says about me!

The great storm of 87, in the UK, saw wind speeds of 86 mph. Melissa is predicted to have sustained winds of 175 mph. I can't even imagine how destructive that energy could be.

Grim juxtaposition of headlines in the online Guardian this morning. "Change course now: Humanity has missed 1.5C climate target, says UN head"; directly below it "Three dead in Jamaica as most powerful storm of the year set to make landfall".

Two Guardian headlines! I was going to link them but people's heads might explode.

185 mph now and pressure 892 mb could tie the record for the strongest landfall in the Atlantic basin.

The outcome is going to be tragic, in both human and economic terms. Perhaps the biggest=ever hurricane, bringing massive rainfall and exceptional winds, moving very slowly over an incredibly vulnerable country.
| Hurricane Melissa on 07:13 - Oct 29 with 309 views | NthQldITFC | Direct from the BBC live feed, and allowing my juvenile side out for a second, the west coast of Scotland looks to be right in the firing line at the moment, although it looks like the sources of any precipitation have significantly shrunken, and that there may not actually be a way out. | |

Good news, Bill Gates has produced his usual slop on climate change and apparently we will all thrive in wealthy countries. Why is it that these people who have no relevant qualifications to inform the public decide to put this nonsense out after what has happened in the Caribbean? “Bill Gates is deeply misguided on climate,” climatologist Dr. Michael Mann said.. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/bill-gates-softens-stance-climate-164432789.html

Have you seen China's new "influencer" law? It basically states that only people with the relevant qualifications can post on medicine, law, finance and education. The platforms will need to verify posters credentials (degree etc) and will be responsible for the posts. The influencers are also going to have to specify if the content is based on research or AI generated content. SB

that is scary if you can't recommend a cold cure to a friend, because of course that will not be confined to influencers. People there are already banned from certain subjects like politics and covid.
