I can't get my head around this. He is apparently worth 500 billion dollars yet has just got himself a potential trillion dollar pay deal. It sounds like there was a chance he would leave the company if this wasn't approved if this article is correct. I cant understand why a man of his wealth needs another dollar let alone a trillion. If I had his money I would be this country's biggest philanthropist and take great joy in being so. Im not saying he isn't generous when it comes to charity, I dont know, but a trillion dollars...really. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwyk6kvyxvzo
I guess if you had his money you'd have had to be ruthless to an extraordinary degree to get there in the first place, so anyone with that much money is not likely to have philanthropy at the top of their to do list (there are exceptions I suppose). Which is such a sad state of affairs. Just think of the good he could do, instead of trying (suceeding) to influence elections, not for the greater good, like he has. A TRILLION DOLLARS. I feel obliged to add a Dr Evil-style little finger to the corner of my mouth and laugh manically. It's insane, incomprehensible, appalling.

For 'fun' I had a look to see how high a pile of one trillion one dollar bills would be... about 67,000 miles! That's over a quarter of the way to the moon!
I’m guessing that the amount of money he could well make is irrelevant to him - the fact that it was approved with people standing up and cheering is what matters to him.
He was probably standing in front of that horde thinking ‘you bunch of utter losers’.
Concept: in the not so distant future Earth is effectively ruled by 5 corporations led by trillionaires. Obviously there is the Japanese led Weyland-Yutani we are familiar with from the films. But the focus is mainly on one owned by an American autistic (and deranged) former child genius which for me definitely had shades of Musk about it.
Anyway, doesn't seem too far fetched a prediction from where we are now.
As to your main point, it isn't about money, but status. Having the world's largest notional pile of money gives social standing, political clout and the leverage to do pretty much anything. The social aspect is important to someone with messianic tendencies (as evidenced by Mars colonising projects to save humanity) and a cult following, who gets a lot of his validation from social media. The political clout and leverage allow him to continue the child-in-a-toyshop existence.
On the more technical side, it isn't actually pay, or money. The way it is structured, if (and it's quite a big if, under present circumstances) Musk can increase the value of Tesla by quite a large multiplier, plus boosting turnover and rolling out products which do not yet exist (real world elements much harder to tweak), then he will be handed chunks of shares with a valuation - at the new target position - of up to $1tr. Not actual cash.
If he then tried to sell those shares, the value would collapse and he'd get nothing like the headline amount. Plus it would likely destroy the company. He will never see that amount of actual money.

This is what gets missed so often in discussions about such levels of wealth.
It's not money in the bank, it's a value of assets (including shares). You can be the richest man in the world one day, then the next your stock falls 10% and suddenly you're only the 3rd or 4th richest (shock horror!).

Or the equivalent gulf in class between us and them lot up the road

I'm not sure how they cope, with so much financial jeopardy....
This feels like a get out of jail card. There are ways he could give a lot more away if he wanted to.
Of course. But that doesn't seem to be in his character.
He's looking for political influence and spectacular, self-aggrandising projects (e.g. huge rockets), not low key improvements to the world we're currently on. Especially medical ones which are liable to be attacked by his anti-vax allies.
I guess the main difference between you and he (even more than the net worth) is, you're not the worst human being on the planet
But how do you know gtsb isn’t the worst human being on the planet? Where is the evidence? He could be Satan or Chris Sutton for all we know.
Actually, you are of course dead right as is gtsb. Personally, I don’t understand the pursuit of money and power? Certainly not beyond having enough to satisfy my rather limited, pathetic needs. I’m just not in that wheelhouse. These people are alien to me.
Thinking of the thread on work life balance, it won’t stop Musk finishing up in a fridge, any more than it did Apple’s Steve Jobs who passed away at 56.

It's human nature, quite a primal genetic instinct, to accumulate as much security and comfort for you and your immediate kin as you can. Some are better than others at realising enough is enough, many will never be satisfied.

How true. I was hopeless at realising when enough was enough. I wish I’d have packed up three or four years earlier. I had very interesting experiences at the end, but if I was able to rewind the clock, I’d trade the experiences for time in a heartbeat.
You are right. Some people they’ll never be satisfied and I guess Musk is well and truly one of those.

It is likely that very attribute that enables someone to get to that position in the first place. Along with many other external factors of course - environment, family, pure luck all providing opportunities.

or in trump and musk's cases, massive family wealth gained in dubious circumstances!
