I can't get my head around this. He is apparently worth 500 billion dollars yet has just got himself a potential trillion dollar pay deal. It sounds like there was a chance he would leave the company if this wasn't approved if this article is correct. I cant understand why a man of his wealth needs another dollar let alone a trillion. If I had his money I would be this country's biggest philanthropist and take great joy in being so. Im not saying he isn't generous when it comes to charity, I dont know, but a trillion dollars...really.

I guess the main difference between you and he (even more than the net worth) is, you're not the worst human being on the planet

To be worth that much and not help the poorest in the world. Imagine the number of people he could save. Even if 5% of his wealth is in liquid assets.

Yes why not do some good with it ffs
No let's stir up hatred and lies

But how do you know gtsb isn’t the worst human being on the planet? Where is the evidence? He could be Satan or Chris Sutton for all we know.

Actually, you are of course dead right as is gtsb. Personally, I don’t understand the pursuit of money and power? Certainly not beyond having enough to satisfy my rather limited, pathetic needs. I’m just not in that wheelhouse. These people are alien to me.

Thinking of the thread on work life balance, it won’t stop Musk finishing up in a fridge, any more than it did Apple’s Steve Jobs who passed away at 56.

Jobs died of cancer (potentially) because he delayed medical treatment. Not sure what that has to do with his work life balance.

I have something that Elon Musk will never have - enough.

The point I was making is that none of us know how long we have, even the most talented and richest in the world. Time is finite which means if a work life balance is important to you, it’s something to work at as soon as you realise it.

For me (and it’s just my view) it makes the pursuit of untold, unlimited wealth along with status and power about as meaningless as it gets. Others, such as a couple of chums who can’t let work go or my buddy who is and always was very status orientated feel differently.

Each to their own. If people want to live to work, great. Their choice but I’ll never understand it.

Importantly, he is trashing the reputation of the company which he needs to grow massively to trigger the reward.

His hyperloop system is a busted flush, his space efforts are way way off target (though costing the US tax payer a fortune). Long may he fail.

Don't buy Teslas folks.

His space efforts are way off target and costing the US tax payer a fortune ?

Are you Jeff Bezos in disguise ? Or maybe Sean Duffy ?

Thats just made up rubbish frankly

SpaceX gets about 500million quid a year in contracts usually to launch things into space, or provide a service to the ISS.

Thats about a quarter of the amount of money the UK government spends on fixing potholes.

I know which tax payer is spending a fortune on something, and it ain't about rocket ships

A financial expert on the World Service said that to get his payday his company's worth would have to increase in value from $1.4 billion to $8 billion, with much of the growth coming from AI robots which he is yet to produce.

With competition, including the Chinese, the expert thought it unlikely he would get there, and would more likely burn out at some stage.

Oh I'm completely in agreement with you. Being a billionaire is a sign of a flawed personality.

As an aside, I don't think there's particularly good evidence for there being a positive corelation between talent and wealth.

Regarding your point regarding talent and wealth I agree. I suppose Trump’s a classic example of that.

A enter example is the engineer Richard Trevithick. He invented the first locomotive and the first high pressure steam engine around the beginning of the 19c. He died in poverty in Dartford and was buried in a paupers grave.

IK Brunel (the greatest engineer of them all?) left about £10m in today’s money but given what he achieved I don’t think £ was a priority and he certainly lost a bundle on the Great Eastern.
