KM on the Championship 11:53 - Nov 11 with 2966 viewsOldFart71

KM has stated he believes the Championship is harder this time around due to promoted clubs spending and clubs like Coventry having been in and around promotion for a few seasons having a settled side.
As we have seen with Town it has taken a few months for the team to gel and even now one or two players still haven't shown their full potential.
Several of the clubs that are top six probably won't be there come the end of the season.
Town should be, but there's certainly no guarantee. We have a top squad of that there's no doubt. My main concerns revolve around our ability to score.
We cannot just rely on Philogene or Clarke.
Now Azon has scored I hope he can kick on and that Egeli, Cajuste and Taylor can chip in with a few goals also.
With regards to any purchases we would make in the January window it would be great to hear others suggestions.

I feel like we are getting to grips with our scoring issues and are third highest scorers in the division, Azon and Nunez off the mark our goal scoring wingers/forwards are definitely working. If Sindre can break his duck that would be great. Also lets not forget Hirst also has five for all his "troubles".

I always thought the season would start slowly and that we'd improve as the season progressed. In our last 10 games we are averaging 2 points per game, I'd definitely say we are trending upwards :)

Well there's a general attitude on here that Stoke will fall away. Last season that was us. The other three all consoled each other that eventually Ipswich would fall away and they would take the promotion places.

This year we are the team everyone is setting up to stifle. We have had to adapt. New players have had to settle in. It feels like we're still in third gear and yet we're in touching distance of second.

The fans just need a bit of patience. I strongly believe we will go back up.

Truly impaired.

Not sure I agree but who am I to disagree with the manager. Seemed way harder last time especially as all the parachute clubs were playing well. Team like Leeds and Leicester were better than us and Sunderland completely outplayed us. We did well to pick up points against them.

The teams we are up against are not better than Leeds, Southampton & Leicester from that season however the circumstances in which we came into the season are what have made it more difficult for us.

Unsettled squad, no momentum etc etc

I dont feel the overall league is harder. Just think the way teams play us compared to 23/24 is something KM is finding harder.

Kms achilles imo has always been the low block. I dont think that's argued. So trying to deal with that whilst putting a new side together that's difficult.

a niche perspective

I think you're right re those 3 clubs but would say the overall standard across the league is getting better.

Worth mentioning we’re joint 2nd top goalscorers in the league but we do need to start being more clinical given our dominance in most games.

We’ve also only kept two clean sheets all season and often concede from the single chance the opposition have against us. Hopefully with Walton in goal now and the team gelling, that’ll improve with each game.

You only play those sides 6 times though, there's another 40 games beyond them. It feels to me like the big clump of mid-table and play-off chasers are tougher this go around. Partly because of teams are less open and playing the low block more often, but also I think because there is more money and more quality out there in those teams this year.

Not sure he's right in terms of the quality of opposition, but the circumstances for us almost certainly were / are harder. We all knew it was going to take time to throw a much changed group together and it translate into something that resembles a team. We're certainly showing the green shoots of late, we look a lot more threatening and we're scoring goals. That's converting into results and points.

If we look at 6 game 'blocks' our points yield is heading in the right direction:

1 - 6: 1.50
7 - 12: 1.67
13 - 18*: 2.00

*So far.

If we get 2 ppg from now until the end of the season that would give us 87 which is almost certainly top 3 or 4, and likely I would say a top 2 finish this season. We're very, very capable of winning another 20 games this season.

It’s harder in the sense more teams are competitive. QPR in 16th only six points off the playoffs. 4 teams on 23 pts. 4 teams on 21 pts. It’s congested. Coventry aside doesn’t look to be any real standouts. A lot of teams thinking “It’s up for grabs” this season.

Agree with that, probably a higher floor but lower ceiling this season.

I'd imagine we are one of a very few teams who can go out in January and significantly spend if needed to, which could give us that final edge in the second half of the season.

It's interesting isn't it?

I think, for me, considering we've played 'poorly' (underperformed is probably the better word), if we win our game in hand we'll be 4th and one win from the Autos. To me, that suggests quite an easy division.

Couldn't agree more.... It was always going to take 5 or 6 games (end of window), before we could properly re-set..
We seem to be flying straight now, if not at our very best...
Don't think we've even won 3 on the spin, yet. But I think we'll have our winning run at some point, 4-5-6 on the spin?
If we can get Akpom firing, he'll be like a new signing. And likewise Burns, if he's anywhere near his previous levels on his return.. Just giving us further depth/options.

Still not sure what we'll do in January.. Hope Ashton isn't, too, trigger happy. As it might disrupt the harmony thats growing within the squad, imo.

Nunez looks good in the 10 role. So, don't mind seeing another DM come in as cover for Azor. Assuming Humphrys is loaned out....
But needs to be either a loan. Or if we look for a permanent signing, has to be top quality and capable of playing at the next level up.

It's reassuring to see the lads coming together, as mates, as well as team mates.

Looking at the current teams in the play offs and the problems Leicester, Sheffield Utd & Norwich have I would say it is far far weaker this season.
1
KM on the Championship on 17:31 - Nov 11 with 1605 viewsHighgateBlue

It may be that the Championship is more 'bunched up' than normal in terms of quality. So far, the three relegated sides have not lived up to expectations (I appreciate we're looking to change that, and hopefully we will), and the three promoted sides have more money than normal, and in Brum's case, a squad on which lots had already been spent in league one (111 points!)

So I think it may seem like there are fewer 'gimmes', and hence maybe harder to punch through the pack and get into the top 6, but it may be easier than normal for a non-parachute team to get into the top 2. Currently the top 6 are all non-parachute teams.

From our perspective, at the start of the season we were expecting the parachute teams to be strong, and we wondered whether maybe Wrexham and Brum would be rivals. With none of those sides in the top 10, we really really should be at least getting into the playoffs. No guarantee that next season will be any weaker, especially if 3 from the current top 6 were to go up.

Hard disagree with Keiran on this one. Leicester and Southampton are weaker than they were previously. There's no team of Leeds's quality. Perhaps it will be tougher to finish 5th or 6th but top two? Not for me!

Cheeky bid for Sargent in our side he will scored shed loads , as long as he stays fit .

Budgies in my opinion would want too much for Sargent and to be honest I don't see him much better than what we have, if at all.
Also we have players on contracts where I believe we are obliged to buy if we were promoted which means we may have several players of similar quality, but none outstanding.
Last time in the Premier League we struggled. I suppose it could be said we were too open, but then players like Leif aren't really defensive and I think judging by the fact we can't keep a clean sheet in the Championship there's every chance we would be worse in the Prem.
Not sure Sargent is as good as Delap and although I know he has been injured even before that happened he wasn't getting to start games.
The Budgies although I detest them they do have a knack of getting the maximum fees for the players they sell.

In 23/24 we had more points than Coventry do now yet weren't top. We were always behind Leicester.

Both Leeds and Southampton went on ridiculous winning runs from around this time. In February we were actually in 4th place, with Leeds looking to be favourites (after beating Leicester).

Next 6 weeks will go a long way to where we finish. My expectation is by Jan 4th we'll be higher than we are now, potentially in the top 2 if we can destabilise Coventry.

Maybe but the price they are expecting and his injury issues on top of his awful loss of form certainly don't make him an exciting proposition right now, more of a massive gamble which I don't think we need to take, better options out there for me like Carlton Morris at Derby.
