And yet still not as disappointing as England.
Bit harsh. We’ve done ok in recent tournaments.
My favourite Scotland failure was Ally’s Tartan Army in I think 78. They puffed themselves up into the best team in the Universe and went down the pan faster than anyone could blink. Hilarious.
They had some cracking players at that time too. Gemmill, the great Kenny Dalgliesh to name but two. Always had hapless mugs in goal, oddly.

My point stands. Comparing expectations, England fans have been more disappointed than Scotland fans. Recent years have seen improvements but they must win a major competition soon.

….but they only ever mention Gemmill’s goal.
The Jeremy Goss of international football.
Funny.

Scotland may not have done well at tournaments but in terms of population size only Uruguay (with a lower population) has qualified for more World Cups.
And in 1974 and 1978, when Scotland were probably at their best, there were only 16 teams, with Scotland missing out on goal difference on each occasion from making it through to the last 8. Indeed, in 1974, three teams ended up on 4 points in their group.

Doubt Hirsty will get much game time at the WC. 5-10 mins maybe unless Clarke drastically changes his tactics and preferences before the summer.
All George can do in the meantime is to keep banging then in for us and help get us promoted to give Clarke a selection dilemma.
Clarke really doesn't seem to trust him does he?
Which I find a little strange to be honest, I mean Hirst is no world beater but Adams and particularly Dykes, are both absolute gash at international level.

Time for Hirst to come on I think . (n/t) by GlasgowBlue18 Nov 2025 21:17 Dykes has been in the squad for 5 years and scored a few goals. Whereas Hirst is a relative newcomer who hasn't really shined for Scotland when he's played. Plenty of huff and puff but very little end product.
Plus he's English.

Alan Rough was the goalkeeper if I remember correctly. Appropriate name.

Well if we are going by that measure, Dykes is Australian. Not sure that should come into it really, if birthplace is an issue then don't call up those born outside of Scotland in the first place.
I accept the argument that Dykes has been around the squad longer and therefore has earn't the manager's trust, that makes sense.
For my money though, Hirst is still a better overall player than Dykes. There is no way any club manager is signing / picking Dykes over Hirst.

They still blew out though and have been dismal ever since. I’ve no doubt they’ll be inflating themselves between now and the finals before blowing up.
England will spend most of the tournament stinking it out before making a good effort and losing in the quarter finals.
One African team will do well. Germany won’t.
Spain will win it beating Argentina in the final 2-1.
Tournament sorted!

Adams should probably start, theoretically he's in his prime and he's got a lot of premier league football under his belt. He's also playing regularly for a mid table Serie A side, its not the standard it once was but 'on paper' he's probably the best option.
I would have Hirst ahead of Dykes though, he's hardly prolific and has never looked much more than an average Championship player. Some might say the same of Hirst though.
Scotland have done remarkably well to qualify with 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat in that group when you look at the squad. McTominay, McGinn & Robertson are all decent and have good experience, Doak is dangerous as well. Other than that they really don't have a lot.

If past tournaments are anything to go by, I rather doubt there'll be much chance of the Scots inflating themselves but I suppose they (we) can dream, and just being there will be something.
Indeed, if they are based on the east coast, I'd be sorely tempted to fly out for a few days, even without tickets. I had been planning to do the same in 1998 had they got through to the next round.
