| Thursday is no longer the new Friday...! 08:31 - Nov 21 with 3709 views | itfcjoe | Used to be a real busy night in town, but was in last night Had a few beers in Arcade Tavern, then went to Mizu at 8:45, they were getting ready to shut, floor was mopped and we were only people there - they said they shut at 9:30 so we did eat but by time we left heating was off, music had stopped. Went to the Botanist, they had stopped serving at 9:30, so walked up to Three Wise Monkeys, that was shut, so back to Arcade for a quick one then home. I can see why with staff costs it's not worth staying open, but just mad how dead it was on what used to be a lively night | |

| Thursday is no longer the new Friday...! on 11:55 - Nov 21 by BlueinBrum | Conversely, I went for a beer after work in the City on Wednesday (leadenhall market area) and I could not believe how busy it was. Was as if it was the last working day before Christmas, but it was actually a random Wednesday in November. Could barely get into any pub. Silly season starts earlier every year! Yeah I was on a rare night out last night on Charing cross road and the crowds were like a stadium emptying! Know its central London, but it actually blew me away how packed it was. I insisted on a Weatherspoons as I'm skint (edit: £10 for a Guinness and larger) - turns out the building used to be the old Marquee club. [Post edited 21 Nov 2025 12:50]

Basically, but bearing in mind how little else seemed to be open I'm glad we didn't take their obvious hint - in fairness one of them was one of the owners so fact they cleared another £80 and a £10 tip was worth staying open for

As a most of people WFH on Friday, it’s the last office day in the week. likely just an Ipswich thing? I haven’t seen jt busy like it used to be 10+ years. [Post edited 21 Nov 2025 13:37]

| Thursday is no longer the new Friday...! on 11:47 - Nov 21 by Blueschev | I thought Monday night at Hollywoods / Kartouche was the student night in Ipswich? It certainly was for me. That and Wednesdays at Sound Academy. |
Monday was grebo and indie night for young uns, Thursday the same age group but cheesy dance music. Both included pound a pint offers somewhere beforehand.

Monday's at the Golden Lion you could get a pint of John Smiths for 99p a pint, then it was £1.25 in the club. Tuesdays were a struggle for a mere £12!

Until this week I used to work in an office overlooking the Portman Road car park, the car park is significantly quieter on Fridays than any other weekday. Post-Covid it seemed to be 2/3 years until there was a growing momentum for companies trying to get people back into the office near-full-time, car-park use seemed to correlate with that. The trend of Fridays being significantly quieter seems a pattern that's emerged over the past 1, maybe 2 years. I've wondered if it's to do with companies having got people back primarily full-time into the office for a period, but realised it's been a very unpopular move overall, and conceded "OK, well you can work from home on Fridays". That's a lot to infer from idle observations of a single town centre car park, so could easily be way off the mark though !

If I am not working away, I go in four days a week, usually spend Friday WFH unless someone is in town or there is something going in in the office. Occasionally I'll switch it to a Monday if I have been away for the weekend. Last night one unplanned glass of wine with a few colleagues turned into watching all of Thursday night football and an Uber home at 11. That seems to happen a little bit too often these days! I do think overall Mondays are busier in the city than Fridays.

| Thursday is no longer the new Friday...! on 12:28 - Nov 21 by iamatractorboy | Yep Mondays for Kartouche but Thursdays for Liquid back when I was a student in early 2000s. Pound for a bottle of VK (vile stuff) in Liquid. |
Even back in early 80’s when Thursdays were really busy there were offers on. The old Mint Condition in St Helens Street did 50p a pint. Heaving! It was a the Scooterboy hangout of choice for the night, think normal prices were still under a quid at the time. But as pointed out, man, the cost these days. If I was 18 now I don’t know what my wage would be as an apprentice, but I’m sure it wouldn’t stretch to 3 proper nights out a week plus football, petrol, housekeeping for Mum etc. All were achievable then.

| Thursday is no longer the new Friday...! on 09:00 - Nov 21 by Reuser_is_God | Yup this, when places are charging £6+ for a Madri then no wonder people would rather stay in. |
And how much do you think they should be charging then ?
| Thursday is no longer the new Friday...! on 18:51 - Nov 21 with 382 views | stonojnr | But its not consistent, ever since covid there's no pattern to it anymore so one week Thursday might be dead, the next its packed, and its not as linked to pay days or special events or anything really. So its very hard to plan shifts for staff as you just don't know what the demand will be. Ive been in some pubs in Ipswich on a Saturday night who called time at 9:30. Very few stay open past 11 now, which is why it was so hilarious our so in touch politicians thought extending hours for the DDay anniversary would boost the economy. | | | |
