We could, and should, be doing better 10:02 - Nov 30 with 786 viewsPinewoodblue

Seems to be a view held by many, including me, however only one team in the Championship has conceded fewer goals and only two teams scored more.

Yet the criticism seems justified. We do giveaway too many silly goals and we certainly should have scored a lot more.

I don’t feel that KMc is above criticism. He does make too many changes from game to game, he persists with fartarseing about at the back. Walton seems to change his mind too many times as to who he is going to pass the ball to and too often puts the receiver under pressure.

We also seem to delay substitutions and often, as at Oxford, our opponents make the first changes.

While there really is no reason why we shouldn’t be promoted automatically KMc needs to review his approach.

And if we had found the net during a sustained 70% possession spell in the first half as we certainly should have done, the pressure would have been reduced on our defence to join in the attack & concentrate on defending!
It’s so obvious to see we desperately need a finisher in the 9, GH just hasn’t hit the heights we hoped for (yet).

We're not good enough yet. Simply put, if we'd gone 2nd on Friday we'd have deserved it, but we're back in 8th because we don't.
Thankfully only 1 team running away with it, so we still have time to improve and consistently be putting shots on target.

Egeli missed our two best chances first half. Hirst had a half chance that he did pretty well with, only just missed the target.

Coventry would need a major blip not to get across the line from here, there like us the season we went up they do what it takes to find a way,
I'd have been more concerned if the saints had kept winning tbh,
Thought us Leicester and the saints would have battled it out and another so Coventry's that one,
We need a winning streak 4 or 5 games would look a lot different,
The teams apart from Coventry I can't see ending up above us none of them, interesting but mediocre league,
It's there for the taking we've just blown one chance to impose our selves,
So the game in hand was a luxury but now we probably need to win it,

The bizarre things is we are very predictable and boring which makes us very easy to set up against.

Our passing out has mistakes in it which leads to opportunities that we rarely force ourselves.

Our press is nowhere near what it was 2 seasons ago.

You could argue that the players are better, but as a team we are miles away from the promotion team. That team would beat this team every week.

The Championship this year Coventry aside is pretty poor and we may improve and get promoted, but unless we recruited like Sunderland we would be worse than last time.

There's far too much criticism of Hirst. KM expects goals to come from across the front 4 but the right side and number 10 are not contributing at all. There's also a lack of real creativity against the low block.

Coventry won’t be caught. They’ve only conceded 10 points so far & theyre 10 points ahead.
We’re one of 11/12 teams that will make the playoffs-offs or get the remaining auto place. Our strength in depth & rotation will probably mean we’re one of the strongest in the last 1/3 of the season.
I’m pretty confident that we’ll make the play-offs & we have a good chance of the 2nd auto.

Just not consistent enough at the moment. When we are good we are very good but we have had too many sustained periods like we did on Friday night where the opposition are reasonably comfortable at holding us at arm's length allowing us possession without real threat.

I appreciate the whole you can't ignore thing..

But I don find it a little miffing to see people bring up the goals scored table like it's a massive positive.

On one hand yes sure of course, end of the day goals scored are goals scored

But the other is it actually shows us that in 15 games we've scored 15 goals or something like that, and had three games where we scored 4 4 and 5

I am genuinely unsure what point you are trying to make here. I think it is that we have won some games comfortably but not been consistent enough. Of course, it is points that count and we haven't scored enough in the games we haven't won.

Not sure what sort of maths you're attempting there, but that would leave 2 goals is 13 games. That's some prize b0ll0cks there, even for you Frimley.

it's not really a point overall, just that the Goals scored stat table doesn't really have meaning by being third on it. Bit different imo if those 13 goals from the 3 games were split into the other games, it would show that scoring overall isn't an issue which we kinda know is as we've missed something crazy like 57 odd clear cut chances or something

They make a completely valid point. To make it more extremely, if we won won 100-0 in one game and lost 1-0 in every other game the scoring stats are irrelevant. We haven't been consistent in front of goal across many games, but we seem to have the ability to smash some teams.

I'm not sure if it is because we haven't set up well against some teams, don't have a way to play through some teams, have been poor in front of goal, just need to be patient with some new players, playing people out of position, or too many changes game to game, etc. but it seems to be a feature.

Goals scored in league matches:

3+: 4 (4W)
2: 3 (2W 1D)
1: 7 (1W 4D 2L)
0: 3 (1D 2L)

Overall that is too many draws. Defeats to Preston and Oxford are disappointing (although Preston are being very effective and Oxford under Rowett will be too). Clean sheets in more of the games we only scored once would make the difference. Scoring more in those we scored 1 or 0 would make the difference. Those stats back up what I feel, though. We are not far away from where we want to be.

The problem is that 55% of our goals have been scored in 23% of our games, in two of them against teams falling apart about to fire their coach.

It’s not a bad return of course after some comprehensive wins but it’s taking chances in tight games like the other night or the final 10 against Watford/Wrexham that would have been the difference to our league position.

We failed to score in 3 games. Which leaves 14 games, 25 goals.

Or you could trim both ends and go we scored 15 goals in 11 games which is perfectly fine as long as you aren't conceding a goal a game.

You seem to be trying to manipulate the stats to fit your argument. If your point is that we aren't consistent enough I am not sure anyone disagrees. If it is we don't score enough you are wrong.

We don’t in certain games or stretches (like last week or the last 4 at home) some big wins have skewed the data.

I don't think they have particularly.

Which teams have we scored more than that, if we take the 3 top scoring matches away from both teams, leaves us having scored fewer than?
