Happy birthday, Steve Whitton 18:03 - Dec 4 with 597 viewsSharkey

65 today

(Coincidentally, I was just listening to a podcast where Karl Duguid (400+ games for Colchester and some for Plymouth) was being interviewed, and he got the question which team-mate he had in his career did he think 'now THAT's a footballer'. He quickly said, "Mark Kinsella, obviously, and then Steve Whitton'.)

Steve Whitton was another one of John Lyall's West Ham old boys who did a good job for Town, especially when played on the right where his height & aerial strength caused problems for a few left backs. Still playing at Colchester in his later 30s so he probably had a lot of footballing ability.

"good job"?!

Single-handedly got us promoted

....in my addled old mind 50% of our goals in that promotion year came from Forrest pumping it long and Whitton flicking it on for Kiwomya to score.

Glory days.

What a season.

…..and the peach of a cross for Gavin Johnson to head in the equaliser in the cup replay at Anfield.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Seeing his name brings to mind a song that was sung for him to the hark now hear tune and ended "he's better than Mich D'Avray". One of John Lyall's very effective signings from the last time we actually won a division. Champions!

I thought that was Neil, former nappy salesman, Thompson? Im probably wrong. Whitton was an odd one. When he first turned up we said ‘dear god why sign up that old hasbeen? He looks like a removal man.’

Well, that view didn’t age too well. He was excellent for us and along with other good players like Dozzell, Kiwomya, Wark at the back, Stockwell and Milton to name just five really gave us a terrific season.

They got lost a bit between the great teams and GBs 2000 side but that was a really good team.

Not sure he ever missed one for us actually. Never forget that last minute penalty winner against Wolves that League two Championship winning season - it was never in doubt!

Deffo Whitton. Whipped in from the right hand side.

Great night that.
