| 3rd day ashes update on 11:48 - Dec 6 by Guthrum | I'm not sure a practice match or two would have made much difference. It's a matter of batting philosophy. All-out attack has its place, e.g scoring quickly to take the game away when short of time, but it has to be moderated by some common sense. If not, it simply results in wickets thrown away. |
it was match practice though, something Stuart Broad has picked up on, they dont look like a team that have their brains fully in the match yet, hence dropped catches, hence not being able to bowl at the same spot for an over, let alone multiple overs. its not a fitness thing, and its not something you can learn in nets, you have to play actual games to get it the batting is the batting, and that wont change till the coaching philosophy does.

| 3rd day ashes update on 09:40 - Dec 6 by Ftnfwest | Yes the lions who did get the practice in are doing well off it…. We’re just simply not good enough at test cricket I’m afraid. Haven’t been for a long time, Root is the last test level player we have. |
As a punter who only really watches the Ashes plus a few other tests and the odd one dayer, is it really true that we just don't have test cricket type players any more? And do other countries have the same problem, India, Aus, S.A., W.I. etc.? Aren't the county games closer to test cricket than a lot of other countries play domestically? Or do test players never play county games anyway? What is behind sticking with this Bazzball crap? Is it really all we can do?

Imo we do have test cricketers but this ridiculous 1 dimensional way of playing limits them

This ridiculous 1 dimensional way of playing "is saving test cricket." Well. Apparently. I don't believe it either...

| 3rd day ashes update on 12:55 - Dec 6 with 88 views | Herbivore | Think this series will spell the end of the Bazball era. It's been fun at times but ultimately unsuccessful. Playing attacking cricket is great but you also need to play the match situation at times and we refuse to do that and there's no consequences for players doing stupid things time and again. The philosophy is so dogmatic that we take every loss as a moral victory so long as we stuck to our guns and that's not a mentality that encourages learning and improvement. | |

Highly likely and agree but don’t let that make you think we have the players that are good enough to compete at the top level in India and Australia. We simply don’t, the bowlers are largely sub standard as well. Archer is the only one that really threatens on any surface, stokes is still decent but fading now, wood never fit, the others passable on English wickets, no quality spinners.

our test players might get a coiuple of games in April early May, when the weather is damp and the ball is moving around, not reflective of conditions in Australia or even our own Summer. And if it is a test player selected for the IPL , then possibly no cricket at all.

| 3rd day ashes update on 11:33 - Dec 6 by Swansea_Blue | Refusing the practice match and bunkering down in their silo isn’t looking any better than it did when they first announced that’s what they were going to do. |
They are on your hopefully doing touristy things. Can't blame them if I had an all expenses paid 6 weeks down under. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

as far as I remember Bazvall came about after the last Ashes down under, when our batsmen were hopeless , their technique was simply not good enough. Cue Bazball and 4 years of fun, albeit that they keep making the same silly tactical errors. For the bowling, we’re missing and will continue to miss Broad & Andeson. They’ve left a massive hole, but bottom line is I don’t think we have enough test technique batsmen.
