The fixtures in the Championship really do come at you thick and fast 13:48 - Dec 11 with 844 viewsGlasgowBlue

Just two weeks ago Stoke were second. Now they have one win in 5 and are out of the play offs.

The league does seem to be finding it's natural level though. For the first half of the season the top six featured teams like Hull, Preston and Stoke who went into the last game of last season needing a result to avoid relegation. And although Preston and Hull are 5th and 6th, their recent form suggests they'll be out of the the play off places by Christmas. Southampton will be in the top six by Christmas and if the Blades carry on as they are then they will join the promotion chasing group not long after. Millwall may seem like an outlier, probably at the expense of Leicester they only just missed the play offs last season by two points.

A top six featuring Coventry, Boro, Ipswich, Southampton, Sheffield United and Millwall would have been fairly predictable at the start of the season.

We were 9 points behind Middlesbrough after just 4 games which really did put us immediately on the back foot.

It's taken us to game 20 to bring that down to 5 points deficit.

Also, Coventry's epic run saw them 12 points clear of us ater 11 games and we've only eaten into that by 2 points over the following 8 games.

26 games to go.

Not only have we got to try and catch Coventry, 'Boro and Millwall, we've got to keep a newly invigorated Southampton and those teams like PNE down to Sheff Utd below us and they're all tough games.

Three teams in the top seven with a minus goal difference, just to underline what a ridiculous league it is this season. Suspect in about 10 games time we’ll see things start to settle more at the top but the chasing pack will still be way too close to call.

With winter settling in we are going to see the teams around pick up more injuries. Our squad is good and can handle missing 2 or 3 players, where others can not.

IF we can maintain this sort of form you will see there form drop and we will close the gap on the top 2.

How would we handle Matusiwa getting suspended and Taylor being injured? We are light in midfield. Big January ahead.

People definitely underestimate how difficult it is to overcome points deficits. Coventry effectively have 11 points on us with the GD advantage. Assuming they revert to play off form they are going to end up around 86 points which means we would have to average 2.03 points a game from here on in to get above them. If they go at anything above average play off form, we are going to find it hard to topple them.

I don't see Coventry having the same second half season that they did in the first. I also don't think that the top two will finish anywhere near the points total that they did in the past two seasons. I still maintain that the top 2 will be Ipswich and Southampton in no particular order.

You might be right but people said the same about us. They've given themselves a bloody good lead after 20 games and can probably afford to drop off to somewhere around 1.8 points per game between now and the end of the season. Expect 90 points could well be enough this year.

I think we had something that Coventry don't. Momentum from the previous season's promotion. It will be interesting to see how they deal with hitting a poor run. We managed to sort out our mid term poor run because we had the same in League One. That said, we still relied on Leeds implosion at the end of the season.

I think second is the best we can hope for. Borough had a bit of a blip but seems to have got over it pretty quickly. Coventry have now lost to us and drawn against a team of ten men for most of the match.
Four important games between now and the transfer window opening. Not that it will determine the outcome of who goes up and who doesn't. But it could either see the gap between us open or close especially as we have both Millwall and Coventry in those four games.

We are definitely more than capable of it but easier said than done to track at 2+ points a game over 26 games in a league where anyone can beat anyone. For reference, in our promotion season we got 1.85 points a game over our final 26 games. Hopefully our 'off' spell came early doors and we are full steam ahead now.

I would agree Matusiwa would be the hardest one to replace especially long term but Taylor we have a wealth of midfielder compared to other clubs around us.

Nunez
Matusiwa
Taylor
Cajuste

That before you have players like Sammy, Akpom or even Clarke to play the 10 role.

I would say our main focus like every Janaury is a striker not a CM. I would like a CM but one who betters us and thats big bucks for sure.

3 of the 4 can play the double pivet role.

If one of those games is Sheffield Wednesday then we should be ok.

We need at least 2 DCM in my opinion. Nunez, Szmodics, Akpom and Clarke ain't playing DCM any time soon.

There are leads and there are leads.

I think Leicester are the better comparison from our promotion season. At this stage they were streaking ahead, and people were suggesting that they'd be setting a new record come May.

In the end they dropped off the pace somewhat, and it was only our capitulation away at Cardiff that meant that they still won the title.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

I actually think Nunez is better deeper and influences games more by getting on the ball more. The others of course generally play further up in the field.

We were only 1 point behind Leicester after 20 games. Coventry have a bigger lead over 3rd at this stage than Leicester did in 23/24. And as you say, Leicester (and us) still went up despite dropping off in form post 20 games.

If ever there is a season for McKenna's classic 'I don't look at the table' mantra, this it it. It's a bit pointless at the moment because it's so tight.

I genuinely think we'll win the league.

KM is starting to mould this team in his image. I'd say we're at about 65%. We're going to get stronger and stronger.

Watch us go.
