Something is rotten in the state of Ipswich 17:50 - Dec 13 with 3294 viewsMullet

I hate southern away days at the best of times, but that was honking yet again. No shape, leaders, guts, threat etc you name it and it was lacking today.

If we can make it to Wembley this season we will have to take it, Leicester fans came away feeling the same thing which says it all.

How Taylor gets so many minutes is beyond me, but when Matusiwa is having an off day, you’re always going to struggle. Freak goals apiece and we still lose by two, because with or without subs we have little cohesion, partnerships or fight.

Kipre came over on his own to clap the dwindling away end at the finish, then the manager who looked like he was as lost as whatever the gameplan was today. Can’t blame Leicester for taking their chances, but you can blame us for making very little.

This was the perfect opportunity to stabilise, even push for a win, instead we collapse again. Whatever is going on behind the scenes, we keep fluffing our lines.

That goal has annoyed me more than it should. I get why he's out of his area but he was miles out and unable to cover his goal. Ok, the fella hit it well but it was a huge open goal, something most professional players would hit, given the time and space. Shocking from Walton.

All keepers are in that sort of area to deal with balls played over the top. Not the keeper's fault, is going to happen every now and then. Chaplin used to try it every other week at one point.

Na, not his fault. Don’t give the ball away and it doesn’t happen, Taylor stands him up then it doesn’t happen.

Poor.

Yeah I know. Like I said, it shouldn't be annoying me as much as it has. Obviously if we'd won the game, it wouldn't have bothered me too much.

No shape?

If anything, we have too much shape. Far too rigid, players all stuck in their own little 10 yard square, passes telegraphed between them.

That's not the same thing. Nor was it especially true today again.

Both CMs all over the place, Nunez and Hirst completely out of their respective 9 and 10. At one point Young was CM and so was Szmodics .

When Leicester got at us, more than once did we have someone out of position in both directions of transitions etc.

Only thing I did feel at the time was Walton might have dived and at least made it look like he was trying to get it. It was a fluke/worldie you just have to accept as a great hit, but all the same it felt like we just sort of shrugged collectively.

He done it recently and just got away with it, it's obviously not picked up by the coaches and relayed and if it has he hasn't listened anyway very poor considering it happened recently,

I can take being sh1t, I can take things not working out, what I can't take is a lack of effort, fight or potential being wasted. I'm the same in all things. The scattergun approach to rotating players and not imposing ourselves on games baffles me.

The Prem was a free hit, I'm not upset we got relegated. But this season is a totally different beast and we seem to have recruited badly for it, have very little substance or balance to the side and we drift through games. Akpom, Szmodics, Cajuste et al are not bad players, especially at this level but we seem to have no idea how to get anything out of them most weeks.

There seems a lot of fans who are still living off the exploits of 2-3 seasons ago which is fine, but when you try and move the conversation into reality and the here and now you're met with this braying dismissive attitude.

McKenna has been heavily backed in a way most fanbases wouldn't tolerate with the return we've had this season. He's used that to leverage new contracts and whilst Palace now find themselves in and around the top 4 in the Prem, he's got us stuttering around the same in the Champ.

We are at a massive advantage this season, the league is crap, the competition for promotion is crap and yet it's all but out of reach right now. How many do we need to win on the bounce to close the gap? 6? 8? 10? Do we think Boro, Cov, Preston, Millwall or whoever all drop points and no one catches us either?

January is going to take a huge turnaround and potentially massive money spent just to keep us within a sniff. I'm yet to see anything but "yeah but McKenna" as a counterpoint to this.

What's he going to do instead? Sit back on the edge of his six-yard area? Might save the two or three attempts like that you might get every season but obviously puts a keeper in a worse positon to deal with more regular threats. All keepers are in that sort of area these days, so not down to CW's personal positioning. I can remember Kelvin Davis being beaten in a similar area about 25 years ago, so actually not even that modern a development.

Hmm, not sure about it being inevitable. I bet at most there’s one more of those this season in the league. I’ve seen 3 in 40 years. For me that’s always on the keeper irrespective of the sweeper role they are expected to play. They have to be alert to pushing too far up and being caught out.

Yet I also agree with the logic of them both restricting the chance of balls over the top and being an extra defender when we’re playing out. So it’s not easy for them, but their first role has to be keeping goal. It’s in the name ;)

Not sure what players he’s asking for signing off on but the entire thing has gone very poorly when you consider our stability and financial clout.

I think there's more than that, I think I've seen two or three this season from inside their own half/on halfway, although this one was further back than is usually the case, so may have been even more unexpected.

It does seem to be something players are trying more, Chappers used to have a go at it regularly a couple of seasons ago. Looking back at it, Walton isn't actually that far out of his goal, not far off the edge of his box when it was hit.

Indeed, although I think more are trying it and we're seeing more success, the Scotland goal recently being another example. Definitely think I've seen at least one other this year. Fatawu had another go recently and came very close.

Like the return of the lng throw we are seeing the return of the Beckham lob.

My view on today is that regardless of the performance, and we looked tired, we won't be done by two goals like that many more times this season. Chalk it up to experience, everyone stop overreacting and stuff Sheffield Wednesday next week.

Agree, two slightly quirky goals at significant points in the game, then another which was a bit of a mess, although again a bit unusual, at another important stage. Thought we looked very sluggish in the first half and was surprised that a number of those that started started after Wednesday.
