And a decent proportion of our support proceeded to throw toys out of the pram about the team 'bottling it'. The reaction from some to our little sticky patch that season was nuts.

Now I know I didn't throw toys or moan or anything like that, but I definitely felt we were going to run out of steam and fall short, partly just personal expectations management at work. Such a remarkable, unlikely to be repeated in my generation sort of season though, wasn't it? Leeds imploding was a little fortunate but still.

Oh, I think having a glass half full mindset after the last 20 years of ITFC was totally understandable. I remember a noisy minority on here being much more than that though. [Post edited 22 Dec 16:31]

That's why that season was so pleasurable. I don't think many of us expected Town to challenge seriously for automatic promotion. W hen we won just ONE out of 9 League games in December & January & crashed out of the FA Cup to Maidstone, we thought it was all over. This season, most of expected Town to be solidly top 2 & while the reality is we aren't far away, the level of expectation has made it much less fun.

Of course the most incredible part of it all was that it was that this once in a generation accumulation of points just to finish 2nd happened 2 years in a row!

Geniunely, wasnt till late April that I actually thought we might do it. Leeds losing at Blackburn (thanks Sammie) was the real turning point | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I remember sitting through that QPR game just before New Year and a bunch who sit at the back of SBR were dropping all the bombs at every player on the pitch that night. Halfway through the second half someone shouted to them "We're 2nd in the league you pricks!" which was met by cheers from quite a few. Apart from the mouths who replied with "We're just supporting the team mate." Truly bizarre night...

Watched that Blackburn game in family suite at PR before watching Town labour to a draw with Boro from the directors box. Was a frustrating game but had a Hladky wonder save. Were we starting KJ in games around this point too? Mad.

I was sitting outside the park so the youngest could have a run-around and the roar from the Fanzone when Szmodics scored was genuinely spine-tingling.

Nearly half way through by BlueBadger 21 Dec 16:11There were plenty of people wetting the bed around this time two years ago when we had our Christmas/Early January wobble. A venn diagram of people who are doing it now has quite a broad overlap.

It wouldn't have been us if we had beaten Boro that day........ Much nicer to do it the hard way (every time)

And in February McKenna was apparently seriously thinking of leaving for Crystal Palace. I wonder what would have happened had he gone? I doubt whether we would have won promotion.

You weren’t the only one who thought we’d fall away. Not out of the play offs or anything, but top two. Leeds were a strange team that season. They could blow teams away and when playing well were the best team in the division. Yet on other days they’d cave in and look completely disconnected. I don’t see it as fortunate for us in the sense that the doesn’t lie after 46 games. It’s easy (and we all do it) to get a little too hooked up on individual games and moments or even batches of games. We deserved to finish where we did. It was a remarkable season and effort from our lads. At the start of the season, I watched us play Stoke in the first home game. After the win at Sunderland I was just looking for a performance that’d prove we could compete. Got that alright! Little did I know….

Similar vibe to Sheff Weds losing at Forest Green the season before. Totally unexpected but hugely important.

Both seasons we were promoted we had winter wobbles. In the Championship it was one in in 9 but it was obvious that was down to not having a striker and our form turned as soon as we got in Kieffer Moore. In League One we had a similar run and found ourselves 8 points behind 2nd placed Sheffield Wednesday who also had a game in hand over us. And that was un the middle of February. Plymouth looked uncatchable, which they ultimately were. In both promotions we had to put on amazing runs of win after win but we also had to rely on both Wednesday and Leeds imploding towards the end of the season. We have the squad capable of putting a similar run together. So who out of Coventry and Middlesboro will be this season's Leeds or Sheffield Wednesday?

I think both of Middlesbrough and Coventry will have wobbles, it's inevitable, the bigger question is whether we take advantage. And that really comes down to sorting our away form out, as our home form is very good.

Cov should have enough of a cushion to ride out any wobble they have. Their fans were in meltdown Saturday when their team was announced - panicking about no depth in the squad - but they got a point with 10 men at inform Southampton. Boro on the other hand… catchable.
