I thought McAteer was dreadful today 18:45 - Dec 26 with 1213 viewsdavblue

He hardly completed anything passes, crosses, shots, dribbling it was as poor a performance as I’ve seen for a long time.

I don’t want this to be a pile on on him but I’m not sure where we go from here. Looks like he needs to get away on loan I thought the same about Jack Clarke and he’s come though it but we don’t have the option to send him on loan anywhere so we are going to have to stick with
Him. Whilst I don’t think he’s a brilliant player he obviously better than what we are seeing currently. Might be one where we have to wait a while I.e. next season but we need someone for now.

He’s clearly very low on confidence and isn’t performing anywhere close to where we need him to be. He looks like a pretty average championship player but we need players much better than that level.

He was overpriced - not his fault but he does work hard which could be why KM trusts him to be in the first team. For what I’ve seen of him, I think we wouldn't be worse off if we promoted a youngster from the U23 team. Would have saved a lot of money.

He’s not the only player regularly underperforming which is rather damning of our recruitment.

First half McAteer was poor, but I thought he improved in the second. Indeed, we subbed both him and Philogene just as they were starting to have an impact on the game, which makes me think the subs were pre-planned rather than what was actually happening on the pitch. Egeli did OK but Clarke was poor today.

Fotmob rate him higher than Billy Jean. Only mentioned as a point of interest for those who take any notice of these things. Dara and Leif our highest rated. https://www.fotmob.com/en-GB/matches/ipswich-town-vs-millwall/39yx3l#4825302:tab

McAteer grew into the game well, and 2nd half was probably our brightest player for the 15-20 minutes he was on. Don't see why you need to single him out.

He was better second half but as someone else pointed out, not giving the ball away and putting a cross in, is a pretty basic ask of a player who repeat after me, COST TWELVE MILLION POUNDS.

Would like to see a Town in 5 special of Ashton being quizzed repeatedly on how they came to the conclusion McAteer was worth that kind of money.

Possibly because half a season has now elapsed and we haven’t seen him
Produce a single assist ,goal , good bit of dribbling , good shot that was unlucky etc literally nothing that gives you any hope that there is actually a footballer in there somewhere !

His price tag isn’t his fault - but so far, he appears ti be as total waste of money.

My bigger issue is his position. He plays on the right wing. We had Egeli, Ogbene and Burns coming back for the new year. Why sign him and let Ogbene go? Did Ogbene ask to leave for first team football? If not, why not spent the money on another CM or striker?

Is any of Azor, Akpom, or McAteer performing at top end championship level? on 19:20 - Dec 26 with 908 viewsPioneerBlue

This can be nothing but objective. Let’s not make it about one player.

Im not interested in gut feel, i have a gut feel. Gut feel says the answer to the question is no but id like data (and this is nothing about personality, they all seem like good guys).

I would love KMck to be able to get them into form, the squad needs it, and its not surprising the team looks a bit bereft of final third ideas and capability when three of your bottom performers are in that part of the pitch and are lacking the current game contribution to offer the team a push to the next level.

Didn't mean to downvote apologies.
He looked decent second half, but I've never seen a player look so bereft of confidence as he did first half. He really needs a goal, theres definitely a decent player in there.

Just said on another post pre planned but christ have some flexibility and brains, at the time of their subs macateer and philogene were becoming very dangerous, oh it's planned take them off, that's crazy,

I think 'pretty average Championship player' is being extremely generous to be honest. Forgetting the price tag, it's not relevant to whether he should be playing regularly, he fundamentally has a real lack of quality. At least when things weren't going for Clarke, you could see there was ability there. McAteer really lacks any technical ability and vision, he's unable to keep himself onside despite being able to look along the line, his end product is terrible, his ball retention is bad, he takes too long on the ball and everything is telegraphed. I genuinely don't see anything in him at all other than he works hard, which is nowhere near enough.

That's not fair or true at all (and I think it was really poor business for the money). It's the money that is baffling. At a fraction of the price he is a young player that can be developed. We paid finished product money though so a return looks difficult.

Back to you point he has has some moments of quality. Been a bit unlucky not to have an assist. I'm sure it was his ball to Azon against Wednesday where it was a miracle we didn't score. Was a quality pass. Would have given him much needed quality. Has out a few decent balls in. Not nearly enough end product yet of course.

I hate this always picking him out though..

Which part isn’t true ? How many goals or assists does he have for us ? How many times you seen him skin a full back and leave him for dead ? How many times has he produced something which made you think F me we have a serious talent on our hands here ?

Had we paid £2m for him you would be disappointed with the return we have had but might think ok it’s only £2m he may come good , we paid £11m for him which currently looks like the worst value for money singing we have ever made at that price !

I would now much rather see Egli start all games with Wes sharing the role as and when required.
