For the Melbourne test, which is the showpiece of an Australian summer, never mind an Ashes one, it is truly farcical. And England can't even be blamed this time.

Would have been interesting to see how many Archer and Wood would have picked up. [Post edited 27 Dec 3:11]

As much as I lambast the cheap wickets we give away, this pitch feels a bit hit out or get out territory.

May as well go out swinging to pick up a few boundaries rather than get your eye in and edge it.

Had TMS on in background while sleeping, so taken it in subliminally, whilst having some weird dreams … Pitch creating a short -form-like game is clearly a happy thing for Bazball - it’s just not an Ashes Test! Freakishly lucky for us, glad for today’s travelling supporters but sorry for tomorrow’s and day 4’s … [Post edited 27 Dec 4:17]

Yes day 3 only ticket holders are going to be gutted … day 4 probably were expecting it before the test even started. Is it my imagination that they used to play some limited over matches if they finished super early… the one thing I had forgotten was the rest days they used to do …. Unimaginable now

The crazy thing about rest days years ago was that some players would play for their counties in the John Player League before returning to test duty on the Monday. Different times indeed!

They’ve lost so much in revenue from these games finishing incredibly early too. Commentators saying Cricket Australian will get involved in pitch preparation for future tests as a result.

Perhaps the Aussies' sense of humour has been brought into play for this one, creating a panto pitch for the panto season ...

TMS pointing out that for all Root’s glittering record and career, this is the first time he’s played in a winning team in Oz brings it home. Ironic that that’s in this team playing this way. Quote of the day from the Aussie commentator whose humour has been enjoyable throughout the series “Plenty of time…” (response by England co-comm - “yes, 3 days, one hour & 10 minutes to score 3 …” ). Was never “stress-free” as Tuffers said earlier though - even with Root still in, only 17 needed, & 6 wickets in hand, the thought of a spectacular collapse wasn’t far away.
