Anyone got tips/methods for successful de-stressing? 12:26 - Dec 28 with 3309 viewsRyorry

Just thinking that I need to gets me stressed all over again! General thing, not particularly related to football.

Learned TM technique many decades ago (70s Ipswich in fact) but haven't applied it for about 30 years, has it been superceded by other/better methods?

Found leaning back against a big tree & breathing out as hard as poss every 20 secs or so helpful, but that obviously has its limitations (like 2C, precipitation ...).

A few things that I do regularly which seem to help

Walking the dog and grabbing a cappuccino mid route
Running and then barcode scanning at Parkrun
Weekly yoga session

Which one do you scan at? I do most around the shire, Watermead is my regular haunt. building up a few around the country, did Ambleside weekend before Christmas, absolutely love them.

Melton as it's my local.

It's tough, and very muddy at the moment, but the cafe in the park is decent and you can always grab a pork pie and some beers from RCB afterwards.

Listen to your favourite music from your teenage/20s years again. I found this a great way of de-stressing during Covid, after a bad working from home day put on an album you haven't played for maybe decades.

Home or away it rarely takes me less than 2.5 hours to get to a game.

However bad I am feeling, the 10 or more hours I am away make me forget all my troubles, and I always return home feeling totally relaxed, even if my worries return first thing the next day,

I think it helps travelling by train, as well as meeting friends before the game. And my mood isn't that adversely affected even if we lose, but it's nicer if we get a result.

I used to find that playing 11-aside football on astroturf once a week after work with a drink afterwards had the same effect.

I find walking helps.
Not related, but have you tried "box breathing"?
In for 6. Hold for 6. Out for 6. Pause for 6 and repeat.
Can take a bit of practice and you may find 4 easier to begin with, but may be helpful.

Finding the box breathing particularly helpful cos it can be done whilst just doing normal stuff around the house at any time, getting stressed when things break, stop working, get dropped & roll under cupboards, couriers misdeliver etc. etc.

Walk the mutt daily anyway; others suggestions still to be tried. Cheers 👍

Hardest part about being stressed is the cause being usually something that cannot be avoided, love life, work life or financial worries. Sometimes you have to try and sit back and work out what you can influence first and foremost, deal with that first and then get into the agenda that is harder to deal with. If you cannot control it, don’t forget about it as you won’t but try to do other things to take your mind off it for while. Like others have said, go for a walk, meet up with friends if possible , pick the positive aspects of life that you are really enjoying currently and really focus on these. I live close to Portman road like some will know and will always try to cut through Gypeswick park when I can, look up at the sky, look at the trees and breath it all in. Life’s short but if you take time to notice it we live on a beautiful planet regardless of some of the ugly things going on around us. It helps me but know we are all different but definitely try not to be too hard on yourself if times are tough, reach out to family and friends and focus on what you can influence and enjoy the most.

Well, sometimes!

When We(s) score(s), yelling ‘YEEEEEEEEEEEESS’ at about 100 db can certainly be described as a beneficial type of ‘breathing’

Having snooker on TV in the background …

Weird discovery when BBC2 got left on last night & I cba to reach for the remote, no interest in it whatsoever may be why I found it strangely soporific.

Avoid watching the news, stop debating on social media, long walks in quiet nature, preferably near running water or the sea, meet up with old friends, join a gym and do some light training, book a holiday and spend time planning it.

Several people have mentioned getting into the great outdoors, and it seems this may not just be down to psychological factors -

“ … immune-supporting chemicals -

The plants in your garden aren’t just there to look pretty; there’s another benefit that people rarely talk about.

“Plants release microscopic compounds into the air called phytoncides. So, when you’re out in a garden or among trees, you breathe some of these in,” says Dr Tang.

These natural chemicals protect the plant, but they also benefit humans. Research around phytoncides is compelling. An investigation published in the journal Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine found that when human NK cells (a type of immune cell that fights virus-infected cells and tumours) were exposed to phytoncides, there was an increase in the cytolytic activity of the NK cells. This means the NK cells were better at destroying harmful cells, in turn, bolstering your immune system.

Another study in the Journal of Exercise Rehabilitation, split a group of 55 women into two groups: a control group with no phytoncide exposure and a group who were exposed to phytoncides. The latter group experienced a nine per cent reduction in stress levels and a 25 per cent reduction in the stress hormone, cortisol. The control group showed no reduction in either of these measures.

“That’s part of why people often feel more relaxed and clear-headed after time in green spaces, even if they weren’t doing anything strenuous,” says Dr Tang.

You don’t need to spend hours outside during winter. Just 10 to 20 minutes outdoors can make a real difference to your sleep, mood, energy and health.”
