A Marquee striker would be fantastic - but everyone is looking for that 23:21 - Dec 28 with 3921 viewsGrief

in the January Transfer window.

I am sure we have some top targets, but they may not want to come here for whatever reason.

Trust in the process, i , like many were a bit underwhelmed with the arrival of Kieffer Moore two years ago, but he was a major factor in us going up! Whoever we get, give him a chance.

Hirst's injury is a blow, but there is a player here in Azon and with a bit of luck, he could easily be on 6-8 goals. He is another who is working really hard off the ball. get behind hm.

Finally a number of you believed Philogene was a complete waste of money, you all now worship him, McAteer is a decent player, Kmac will improve him too, keep the faith.

Happy New Year to you all, still half the season to go, we have the strongest squad in the division, "the cream rises to the top!"

Agree with that to an extent, but I really struggle to believe that there wasn't a few options more suitable than Azon. We've left ourselves horribly short up front, for the 3rd season on the spin.

Don't mean to dig out Azon all the time, and I think he's a decent bench option against a tiring defence, but he has looked miles off it when starting. Perhaps he'll become the player we want given time, but he's not the player we need right now.

It's tricky isn't it because hindsight is always 20/20 but Azon came here with good pedigree (under-21 international, lots of minutes in the Spanish second tier, a move to Serie A) and he looked promising in his early cameos. Style wise he's a decent fit on paper, works hard and can lead the line, can press pretty well. But I agree that he's not offered enough when starting. Could we have known that in advance or after those promising early cameos? And would there have been many options who would have been a better bet than someone with his pedigree who were available and achievable? Really hard to say.

Isn’t hindsight kind of a point of the forum thought to analyse or give opinion about which signings have worked out and which haven’t.

As I said before I think Azon was a reasonable gamble to make given pedigree and no upfront fee. I did think Akpom would be an option at no.9 but KM clearly doesn’t fancy him there. For me he’d offer more upfront than Azon in terms of physical presence. My frustration with Ivan is that he goes down every time there’s a slight just of wind looking for a free kick. He should have learned to at least try and stay on his feet after half a season.

The “Philogene used to be sh*t” is a bit of an old wives tale.

Philogene struggled in the *Premier League*, and has naturally thrived at the level he had thrived at before.

The same does not apply to Azon, McAteer et al.

Of course we're basing discussions on hindsight but the club doesn't have the benefit of that at the time they sign these players, otherwise Akpom and Azon wouldn't have been signed. On paper, both looked good options at the time but it hasn't worked out for either of them. I'd be tempted to try Akpom there from the start as at least we know Azon tends to be good coming off the bench. If Nunez continues as the 10 it should mean the spaces Akpom likes to play in aren't too congested either. Certainly worth a go, although I'm not hopeful as Akpom has looked a bit of a spent force so far.

I'll be surprised if anything happens early January. Once Prem teams get their shopping sorted, they may be looking to offload. A young loanee with a permanent option wouldn't be such a bad thing. BTW, i think we need a fourth CB. We couldnt risk all 3 senior CBs in a back 3 without back up.

We don’t need young kids who are still learning. We have Egeli that’s enough. We need people who can get the job done with experience. We can worry about making money off kids once up,if we go up. Don’t think we are anywhere near it personally.

Agreed, give Akpom a run up front. Azon hasn't shown enough and can be the super sub.

If he continues not to perform up front as well as at 10, then at least we've given him every chance and we're justified in dropping him from the squad when a new striker comes in

This is all very well discussing players.
But what about these milk bottles ?
Do they have no say ?
And what about the Blue Tits, surely they should be considered ?

Don't remember him ever doing a somersault when scoring an equaliser for us but I could be wrong.

No, without trawling back through the stats and videos I don't know either, but it was his first goal for Forest and against a side who are second in the league. I think he was looking across to the bench and seeing Sean Dyche mouthing 'Don't even think about it.'

[edit: Meant to reference RoBTheMonk's post on the previous page on the subject of dangerous back flips too, although I had already thought about this but from the point of view of Dyche seeming a bit grim.]

He looked good at points last season, particularly in the Brentford game he got injured.

McAteer was a ridiculous signing. I’m sure Kieran Knows

A whopping 34 minutes against Brentford. Fantastic. What a barometer to go off.

He was dreadful up until that point last season, and had 2 chances this season and McKenna saw enough. He’s woeful.

What we should be doing is finding our own Mihailo Ivanovic. How on earth can Millwall have tabs on the Serbian top division, but we can’t?

Agree with this. Our scouting must have been blo0dy awful before Ashton rocked up. Because 4 years on we still don’t seem to have much of a clue apart from the French league, u21s, and now apparently Norway. Our scouting network seems to be a real problem to us still.

Where did this marquee signing nonsense come from ? Never used to hear that term, is it another American terminology?

Imagine if we had have signed that marquee striker in the summer?! Crazy concept i know...
(Not a dig at you btw,its just ridiculous that every summer window we leave ourselves a number 9 short)

Who should we have signed? Its not like we didn't try. The traditional no 9 which we play with is in short supply and plenty of teams were looking, as they will again in Jan. We probably should have signed Kieffer when we went up but I guess he wanted regular games which he wouldnt have got last season.

Decent stikers, esp those in the Delap/Hirst mould are so thin on the ground.

Poll: Will Phil ever confirm we are actually close on a signing ever again
