| Starmer gives Farage a late Christmas present on 08:24 - Dec 29 with 1963 views | Herbivore | If Farage is consistent I'm sure he'll say that as this happened many years ago and was probably just "banter' then it's a non-issue and all political. Of course in reality those comments are awful and politicians should be a lot more careful about offering public support to individuals without doing due diligence on their background. Starmer and Labour just can't get anything right, sadly. | |

He's crap but he's probably less bad than his immediate three predecessors, who saw it as their job to systematically destroy the country. Given the damage Cameron did to the country too I'd say he's worse. So that's four worse in the last 15 years by my reckoning. That's not to say he's not crap, he's pretty hopeless, but others have done far, far more damage than him. We're in a run of PMs a bit like when Town has the four Pauls and Keane in a relatively short space of time, each trying to outdo the last in their lack of competence.

| Starmer gives Farage a late Christmas present on 09:24 - Dec 29 with 1580 views | DJR | https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/dec/28/successive-uk-governments-face-q It doesn't sound like either of the two main political parties have covered themselves in glory on this, which is rather surprising given the first paragraph below. "The posts cost him a nomination for the European parliament’s Sakharov prize in 2014. The group backing him withdrew their nomination for the human rights award, saying they had discovered a tweet from 2012 in which he called for the murder of Israelis. In 2015, Abd el-Fattah claimed his comments had been taken out of context, and that while it had seemed “shocking”, it had been part of a “private conversation” that took place during an Israeli offensive in Gaza. The decision to grant citizenship [in 2021] would have been made by the Home Office, which at that point was led by Priti Patel, advised by the Foreign Office, where Liz Truss was foreign secretary and James Cleverly was the minister for the region. Successive Tory prime ministers have also called for Abd el-Fattah, to be released and reunited with his family, including Rishi Sunak who said it was “a priority” for his government in November 2022. When Labour came to power, Starmer continued lobbying the Egyptian president over Abd el-Fattah, ongoing imprisonment, making three calls to his Egyptian counterpart, while the UK national security adviser, Jonathan Powell, also personally urged the Egyptians to end the detention." It beggars belief that it's taken most people 5 minutes to find out that he wants to : Kill the children and torture the mothers of British police officers Kill a senior official Finds killing "colonialists" and "specifically Zionists" heroic Believes that Police officers aren't human and he wants to kill them all Supports the random shooting of white males Admits to being a racist who hates white people Calls British people dogs and monkeys Wants to send in drones to Jewish weddings Admits to being a violent person who wants to kill all Zionists Supports the killing of Israeli athletes Believes that violence is acceptable and that the extermination of whites is desirable Seriously, seriously hates white people, particularly those of British, Dutch and German descent Bemoaned the fact that Iran's nuclear programme isn't dedicated to the eradication of the white man Denied that the Holocaust was a genocide as there are still Jewish people left alive Believes it's a good thing white people aren't breeding Wants to burn down Downing Street and hunt Police I've probably left a few choice quotes out but one would hope that the Prime Minister and his Tory predecessors would have done due dillegence on this nasty fellow. | |

I can understand the 'luvies" getting involved because they are usually closeted glory seeking tossers following the latest celeb-cause. But MPs should know better and have the tools to do better research.

A a “private conversation” on twitter is not private. And the quotes I posted are not from one single "conversation" or "out of context". And even more laughable is that clip is now doing the rounds showing Starmer as leader of the opposition claiming that Alaa Abd El-Fattah was ‘imprisoned for his social media posts’. Call me naive for thinking that maybe Starmer should have read some of those social media posts or at least got his team of researchers to do so..

It does make you wonder. Surely some staffer could have spent 5 minutes looking at his social media accounts before giving Starmer the okay to post that tweet? Some horrific views expressed there, reflects badly on the PM. That said, I'm not sure Reform can claim much moral high ground here given their leader's views and when they've previously railed against people being punished for comments on social media, even when those comments have called for burning down hotels with people inside them at a time when there are riots going on and that kind of thing was actually very likely to happen. That they're now calling for deportation isn't going to look very credible and it seems highly unlikely to be legally feasible.

So the Tories now calling for him to be deported on the basis of tweets they should have known about when they granted him citizenship looks like hollow politicking. Who'd have thunk it?

Won't matter one jot to his supporters. All they will see is Starmer welcoming a terrorist supporter who wants to kill all of us and our families. The Jew hate won't be of particular concern to the average Farage fan. It's the eradication of white people which will stand out to them. [Post edited 29 Dec 9:55]

Not just Starmer. It was a coordinated message from Starmer, Lammy and Cooper almost word for word. Re your final para, I refer you to the answer I've just given to Dub.

He was backed by Liz Truss, Boris Johnson, IDS, James Cleverley etc. Jenrick, who is now calling for him to be deported, was immigration Minister when El-Fattah was given British citizenship. You couldn't make it up. The Egyptian government now in the process of revoking his Egyptian citizenship and we are stuck with him.

Don't disagree with any of that, the hypocrisy is a bit nauseating though. Whole thing is a massive mess though, from both the tories and labour.

Without trying to defend either Tory or Labour politicians, this is clearly the sort of thing that officials in the Foreign Office and Home Office ought to have picked up. Or was there some other overriding interest that made us support him? On the other hand, it does appear that there we have relatively good relations with the Egyptian military dictatorship. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-egypt-strategic-partnership-22-july-2025 [Post edited 29 Dec 10:37]
