Transfer priorities look a little different now 09:21 - Dec 30 with 1095 viewstractorshark

OK so clearly one result doesn’t paper over a few cracks but last night did put our transfer needs a little more in perspective.

I’ve been saying we urgently need a striker and right winger. And ideally another defensive central midfielder with potentially more back up at left back and No10 (if Szmodics can’t stay fit or leaves).

But Burns’ return and Greaves’ performance makes two of those issues less pressing.

Burns clearly needs to be managed but Walle is progressing well and McAteer might actually benefit from playing a few cameo roles against tiring opposition.

Greaves was superb. I’m not saying he’s a natural left back but the couple of times I’ve seen him play there, he’s looked more than capable,

The striker is without a doubt the pressing concern.

Agree with a lot of that. But isn’t it amazing that despite being the 2nd highest scorers in the league we all agree that our biggest need is a striker! Which suggests that we’d be streaks ahead of Coventry if we had a goal scoring striker - or had had a non leaky defence earlier in the season.

I think that’s a fair assessment but I’m still concerned about the RW position. Wes will have to be managed carefully and Im not sold on either of the other options. Mcateer may come good but desperate needs something to falls for him whether it’s a goal or an assist and Egeli is a work in progress, but in the here and now where we are looking for the top 2 he’s not ready in my view

Hmm... I thought Egeli was a bit poor. Really wanted him to run at the FB, but keeps on cutting back in. Think if we get a chance, I'd try Egeli in the 10 and let Burns and McAteer fight for the right wing place.
In some ways, CM is more important as the striker. Matusiwa gets injured and we're screwed.

CM reinforcement requirement is clearly up there too. He may have walked the tightrope pretty effectively for the last couple of games, but I was really worried that Azor had got his 10th yellow last night (card ended up being shown to Furlong), and we really miss him when he is out - more than any other player I think. Can he make it to game 37? Not likely in my view...

Striker and CM are the two. Greaves gave a reminder last night that we have another workable solution at left back but if we needed to give him a run over several games we'd look pretty thin on defensive cover generally so would still like to get someone in.

I think we will probably be targeting 3 in, like other January windows. CF and CM a must. A lot rests on Burns. Not much to be learned from last night in terms of overall fitness and play, but he looked very much his old self in 70 mins for the u21 the other day. So I’m hopeful he can be like a new signing. Hard to say what the 3rd role would be. Maybe LB but hard to recruit for back up players rather than starters. Maybe a surprise.

That is what the stats show too though- we've got the highest xG but the biggest underperformers (in Hirst and Azon)

Burns return give me a semi-on on 10:31 - Dec 30 with 417 viewsDyland

Metaphorically of course, ahem.

The positivity from last night has even got me thinking he may even push McAteer on...
