| First they came for the firesticks... 19:50 - Dec 30 with 2295 views | Zx1988 | I'd like (if that's not the wrong word) to think that it's an appropriate response to a specific threat, rather than trying to stop people enjoying themselves for free. But then I remember it's 2025, late-stage capitalism and all. [Post edited 30 Dec 2025 19:51]

We can't possibly have the hoi polloi descending on Primrose Hill. Young Tarquin may stumble across a discarded bottle of non-vintage champagne or, heaven forbid, prosecco.

When one of my daughter's was at Uni in London her favourite hangout was Primrose Hill.

Metropolitan Police seem to have decided it would be a better use of their resources to keep people out of there instead...

I hadn't known about that but, yes, it happened on NYE 2023/4. With that context it certainly seems to make a little more sense, although still seems a little heavy-handed on the basis of a single incident.

it may also partly be a knock on effect of martyn's law - if the police know it is a large public gathering, even if informal, they probably think it requires a security plan and they don't have the resources on the night.
| And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show |

| First they came for the firesticks... on 12:14 - Dec 31 with 555 views | DJR | The following suggests that closures on New Year's Eve are not a recent thing but why let that get in the way of social media-driven outrage. https://www.royalparks.org.uk/press-release/primrose-hill-update "The park will continue to be closed to the public from 10pm until 6am the following morning on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during the British Summer Time daylight savings period, and on ad hoc days at other times of the year in response to operational need. This includes night-time closures on Bonfire Night, Hallowe’en and New Year’s Eve, as well as during extreme weather events, continuing a pattern of closures that has been in place for more than 10 years." Maybe in the past people have gained access anyway but the following suggests more robust measures. https://www.royalparks.org.uk/get-in-touch/media-centre/news-press-releases/prim The Royal Parks charity will begin works to install gates on Primrose Hill on Monday 24 March 2025, to support park closures, when necessary. The gates will be installed one at a time, to ensure access at all times and to ensure that visitor disruption is kept to a minimum. Visitors will be directed to the next adjacent gate during works taking place at a particular entrance, with completion of the installation expected in early April, dependent on weather. The new gates will be in keeping with the Grade II-listed landscape and with other similar gates we have across our parks and will replace the use of the unsightly and costly temporary Heras fencing which has been used in recent years to support closures and which is prone to damage. EDIT: two other Royal Parks, Greenwich Park and St James Parks are also closed, and I came across this. Visitors are reminded that organising large gatherings without permission and setting off fireworks or lanterns is in breach of The Royal Parks regulations, which are enforced by the Metropolitan Police. | First they came for the firesticks... on 13:01 - Dec 31 with 396 views | leitrimblue | If Tarquins mummy as been stupid enough to pay almost 400 quid for the family to see some fireworks, it's not fair that some cider drenched plebs can watch for free on top of some hill. I would go further and insist that Londons poor don blindfolds on new years eve from 11:59-12:30. Its bad enough that tax payers pay for their alcohol and sh1te tattoos without supplying um with free fireworks displays. I blame 2 tier Keir for this, we would never have had this kinda thing under the Tories. GSTK | | | |

Yes, I imagine Tarquin's mummy would have been one of those clamouring for closure given the public engagement mentioned in the first link in my above post. [Post edited 31 Dec 2025 13:13]
