Nixon reckons we're looking at Bamford.... on 18:52 - Jan 6 by Kieran_Knows

Whilst I appreciate January is a tricky month to do deals, I have to say - like I mentioned on another thread the other day - that if 12 months worth of Prem money is scouting you Patrick Bamford, I genuinely think something is wrong within the club.

I just think we find ourselves in limbo a bit when it comes to signing a striker this window. Ultimately we need the right player for the next 4 months rather than necessarily the one for the next 4 years. If we go up, it opens doors (or should do if our scouting network has grown and improved) to a higher calibre of player that we can't currently attract.

I'm not sure that's necessarily the case, we're being linked with players outside of the UK, there's Matusiwa, Azon, Walle-Egeli & Kipre already, 3 of which had never played in England. There was clearly interest in the Uruguayan lad in the summer and others since. We'll never pivot our interest solely to young foreign players. Even Brighton have picked up Welbeck and Milner at a time when their overseas recruitment is generally regarded as top class. We need a balance.

I think it’s more that you’re unlikely to find your future (Premier League) number 9 in January and so you want somebody to do a job for 6 months only really - Bamford, perhaps Wilson and a short-term loan with no real obligation can fill that void but the pool of players is small and definitely not ideal.

The hope of course is that we instead unearth some gem from abroad but I think that’s easier said than done.

As you say its a hard time to recruit. You're not going to get oven ready premier league players dropping to Champ in the hope we go up. Its hard enough to attract them as a newly promoted side when they're guaranteed a year of PL football. We're effectively looking for the intersection of a 'better than what we've got' and 'willing to sign / can afford' venn diagram, which is hard when you've got a good squad at this level. Not to mention having more than half an eye on whether they would be able to contribute at a higher level.

A short term deal to bolster our options for 20 games feels the most sensible to me, and then asses the situation in the summer when (hopefully) we'll be recruiting from a higher base and wider appeal.

There will certainly be competition for him, not least Sheff United where he's doing well but no doubt elsewhere too. If we want him I would think we'll be able to put a decent package his way though, especially in the absence of a transfer fee.

He's not going to be one to lead the line in the premier league but we need a bit of experience and know how. Ultimately if he plays his part in getting us there over the next few months then having another year on his deal is a pretty minor issue in the grand scheme of things and with PL money. We either rate him enough that he sticks around as a bit part, or he's loaned back to the Champ where there would no doubt be interest.

I would agree with that, would imagine we will be able to compete financially with other team that is likely to looking around him.

If it were an 18 month deal I personally wouldn't be majorly concerned, he could probably play that 2nd or 3rd option in the PL to be honest, without being your number 1 striker.

But as you rightly say, if he delivers near dozen goals between now and the end of the season for us that helps us get over the line, it would be a smart play.

The only question will of course be his fitness.

the bigger question is whether he will fancy moving to Suffolk as he's been based in the north east for the last 8 years, while he is now married with a small child. Boro looks a more likely destination or he may stick with the Blunts, even though we could probably out-bid both of them.

Nixon reckons we're looking at Bamford.... on 14:53 - Jan 6 by gringoblue

maybe something to do with him being a private schoolboy, which is atypical for a footballer?

It would be interesting to know how many people know that and hold it against him.

Off the pitch, he seems like a very decent bloke. He’s been dealt a crap hand with injuries but appears to do everything he can to overcome them.

On the pitch, he does make it very hard to like him unless he’s on your team! He’s constantly looking for fouls and moaning. An unbelievable finisher at this level.

I think he would be a risk, considering the yards expected of our no9 and his injury record. However, if fit I think he would be able to fulfill it. Huge if.

There are loads. It might be atypical but its not all that uncommon at all, especially for highly thought of players in top academies as paying school fees is often a hook to get them in, or players with footballer parents who aren't short of cash.

Foden, Bellingham, Lampard all did. ITFC wise Nick Pope, Mings, Norwood, various others all did.

We also currently have an Old Etonian the playing staff.

I would be absolutely all over this.

6 months of Patrick Bamford, as good a finisher as you will find at this level still.

True. Pretty sure Baggott was at a private international school too before coming back to the UK.

Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri did too, pretty sure Arsenal think nothing of paying for private schools for their higher rated academy lads. Max Dowman as well, Brentwood private school with Arsenal picking up the tab. There are others. Pretty smart if it means you get the pick of the best young players, what's £30k a year investment for someone potentially worth £100m+.

And could some of our fans get over the fact that Bamford spent 3 months on loan with the Budgies?

If Lambert can get people to forgive his connection with up the road, anyone can do it!! He managed to persuade most fans (including myself) he was the man for the job despite being inept and a budgie.
