Bloody forgot to pay the dart charge x 2 after the aborted trip to Portsmouth on Sunday, bollicks. Was meant to do it Sunday afternoon when I got home but obviously slipped my mind and got reminded by it this morning by a story about the Humber Bridge toll booths closing.

Anyone forgot about it this long before and managed to get it paid with no fine?

Dot Gov site not much help and only says ‘you may be fined’ if you forget.

Not even sure if it’ll be 2 x £35 fines should they come or one.

F’sake.

I got a letter through yesterday charging me £108 for a missed charge back in November, I paid 15 minutes late.

They reckon they wrote to me on December 4th but I didn’t receive anything so I’m going through the appeal process.

If you do get a fine I’d recommend calling them up rather than appealing online as it sounds like they take common sense into account and in my case would have waived it if I hadn’t already appealed online.

I've done it before for this, or something similar, a few years ago.

On that occasion I got a stern reminder not to forget in future but that, because it was my 'first offence', they'd simply let me pay the charge retrospectively on that occasion.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Just never seems to be any sort of good will when it comes to these things, just mug everyone off.

Appreciate loads of people could use the ‘I forgot’ excuse but sometimes it is genuine haha they’ll be able to see I paid the one for Millwall as well.

Same for me as a first offence, albeit that was also quite a long time ago so not sure if its changed since.

Prompted me to set up an account so it charges your card when you use it. Worth 2 minutes of your time even if you're not a regular user.

Hopefully I get that then, as just mentioned they will see I’ve paid for the crossing before and as recently as Boxing Day.

If its any consolation quite a few years ago my then girlfriend (now wife) and I decided it would be a nice 'cheap' break to hire a campervan and go to the New Forest for a few nights. Being a bit ignorant to this sort of stuff I merrily drove said campervan out of South-West London (Roehampton area IIRC) down to the New Forest and back, unknowingly falling foul of a weight limit (I think - might've been emissions) on the road.

A week later I got a letter through, £250 fine each way. They weren't for budging when I tried to explain its just me being a numpty. So much for a cheap few days.

I feel for you but I think you only become liable if you get a penalty charge notice.

I'd suggest you give this number a call but I can't say I found the ULEZ number helpful when I was shunted off the M25 into the ULEZ zone on the return from a night game.

For the future, it might be worth setting up a Dart Charge account.

Same happened to me the previous time I drove to Pompey but that was in 2019. A friendly warning due to it being my first offence and just paid the standard charge for the two trips over that day.

I did a few years ago and I opened an account and the crossing fee was taken from that, it is worth a try for the sake of £10, (if the minimum is still that) this has also worked for a few people I have told about this. It also means that you won't have to worry about it in the future, you can add multiple cars to a single account as well.

Pain innit.

For those who are infrequent users, you can set up an account to automatically reload as/when.

Although remember to change when you sell yer car, or you'll be paying for someone else to use the crossing ffs

It’s a joke and getting worse all these emission zones, width/weight restrictions etc, tolls, parking, just all out to get more money from people already paying loads of taxes!

Yeah, proper money spinners. When I lived in London I basically budgeted an annual 'shit tax' for road infringements. I would get at least 1 per year. Cameras on every box junction, I know people will say don't enter until you can pass through but its not always that easy when some tosser pulls out of a side road in front of you. When you're doing 25k miles a year and a lot of driving around cities its very easy to get done for something or other. But hey, might as well keep mugging honest hard working folk.

I have a terrible mental block with the Dartford charge and have had numerous fines over the years. It’s definitely worth calling them once the penalty charge notices come through, we have had success on more than one occasion on being allowed to just retrospectively pay the fee rather than the fine.

I did *exactly* the same a few weeks back.

I eventually got two letters (one for each crossing) - one said "first offence in this vehicle, you can just pay the £3.50"

The other said "£35 please"

BUT

When I logged in to pay online, in both instances it only charged me £3.50.

Result! Won't be so lucky next time.

Yup, this also happened to me last year. I noticed an unexpected ULEZ charge come from my bank account. As an infrequent London driver I had forgotten I'd even registered a car for autopayment. Hadn't owned it for over a year!

Sad thing is whoever drove it probably also paid, as they would not have known. So TFL gets paid twice, and no refunds allowed (I tried). In so many ways these charging schemes are a stitch up. See also: car tax when a vehicle changes hands mid-month.

Minimum amount to hold on the account is £15, and if your balance dips below a certain level, they automatically help themselves to another £15.

Suppose the up-side of that is you'll never not pay and therefore get fined.

From memory, you can't register to auto-pay on a vehicle that's already registered to auto-pay.

Pretty sure you can't pay a one-off either.

Properly crappy system.

May be worth giving them a ring.

I did that with the new Runcorn bridge over the Mersey a while back. Spoke to them and just had to pay the toll fee.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Highly recommended getting a Dart account, which takes the money automatically off your credit card with each trip. I use the Dartford crossing every time I go to a home match, and having a Dart account removes all the hassle.

It’s just extortion and I’m sorry to hear you got ripped off by Dart Charge - ironically something the public were promised would end when the bridge was paid for. Yeah, right. There was more chance of Nelson getting his eye back that that ever happening. I might get less annoyed about it if the profit went to building another crossing - which is sorely needed.

Living in Kent I obviously use the tunnel/bridge a lot to get to Suffolk so have an account with auto top up, but that doesn’t stop Khan and his robbers seeking to rinse me with his 20mph limit, parking fines you name it. During Covid, my sister who lives near Epping Forest stayed in Suffolk to look after my dad. I volunteered to go over and collect her post and check on her flat. I parked in the usual spot, nipped in and picked up her stuff. I was 10 mins.

By the time I got back there was a traffic warden standing there. I hadn’t realised that between my previous visit and that one, LB of Sadiqeville had slapped up parking restrictions. The signage was hidden behind foliage which meant unless you looked for it you wouldn’t see it.

I politely explained the situation and why I was there and that I hadn’t seen the sign. The bloke said ‘not my problem. Tough’. And so it proved. I appealed but was basically told …..tough. Given during Covid the streets were hardly packed it was a pure money making exercise.

As for appeals, always worth a go.

My dart account has £6 in it, and it has never automatically topped up, I thought this was something you opted in or out of.

I have just remembered that around 7 or 8 years ago a work colleague remembered not paying his dart charge at Christmas and around this time of the new year, he opened an account and they took the charge from that with no fine. If you haven't called them and been able to pay, then it is definitely worth trying this. Although things may have changed since then.

Fortunately I remembered to pay when I got home on Monday, but for all those saying get an account, I used to have one, but I got "thrown out" when I didn't use it regularly enough. I'll try to join up again and see what happens?

on that crossing a few years ago I paid but put my car registration in when we were in my wife's car, when the penalty charge came through the door I checked my credit card to confirm my payment then called them to see what was going on. The lady had a laugh and joke with me and sorted it out quickly and easily, they seemed very relaxed about errors and just looked to collect the initial payment. Which was a pleasant surprise.
