The problem is structural and the ECB have deliberately messed the rest of English cricket up in pursuit of the Hundred. I wonder how long the market for £150+ tickets for Test matches lasts if the sport itself doesn't care.

Totally agree, the hundred should be binned its a sporting dead end.
"There is nothing the hundred brings to cricket that couldn't be achieved if the ECB had the balls to do the 20:20 tournament properly'. Not my words but those of some bloke called Shane Warne
County cricket need to be completely restructured and thinned down. Yes that will upset some underachieving counties but again quoting Mr Warne 'there are too many meaningless games where mediocre players can earn a living playing mediocre cricket under no pressure'
Also, for the long term sake of the game it needs to come back to terrestrial TV where everyone can watch easily.
There are some hard choices but as always they will be bottled while the ECB chase the big bucks which will be wasted on propping up the 'old boys' not the real development of the sport [Post edited 9 Jan 7:54]

Ironically the article itself feels a little like bazball. It raises valid and serious points about the deep-rooted structural problems facing English cricket; elitism, poor governance, and a loss of cultural identity, but then gets caught up in calling out the same individuals , and fails to focus on those bigger issues. |  | | |

The Hundred made £500m for the ECB through team sales, to be reinvested into the county game and ensure it remains solvent for years. Personally always think the take that there are too many counties is a load of rubbish. Bigger issue (and the hundred does contribute to this sadly), is that too much if the county season is played in the spring, which is only really conducive to developing a load of 75mph swing bowlers rather than quicks or spinners, and it isn't great for batsmen to bat on raging green tops. |  |

Shield is massively overrated at producing players for the Australia side. Of this series only 3 or 4 made their Shield debut in the last 10 years, including Doggett, Inglis and Green who hardly set the world alight. Cummins and Hazelwood have played very little Shield cricket in their careers. Only position Shield is really good for is ensuring a decent list of back up quicks. Batsmen who have done well in the shield such as McSweeney and Burns have been poor test players. Top order situation is no better than Englands. | |

You could keep the existing system and thin it down, just make the County Chanpionship an 8 team league, centrally fund overseas players from the money raised from the hundred, give them three each and make them good ones
I imagine it's really expensive logistically but you could have an overseas portion of the calendar in the season for Spring maybe in somewhere like Dubai or USA etc |  |
