Their stadium doesn't hold 27000. Apart from that, as you know, I was commenting on the vocal support.

But thats a given. Low champ side as cup underdogs v prem league leaders. Plus smaller ground atmosphere sounds better anyway.

While that’s true let’s not make out like Fratton isn’t louder than PR on any occasion. The atmosphere’s aren’t comparable and the OP is right.

Whenever I’ve been to Fratton Park I would say the atmosphere is no better than Portman Road . They do however make their presence known in the big matches. [Post edited 11 Jan 15:52]

I think it's pretty widely agreed that they have one of the most passionate and vocal supports in the country.

Do they in a championship fixture v charlton. Or is it just when they become underdogs in a cup game... Genuine question. Im not saying town is great. It may not be vocal now. It certainly wasn't when I use to go other than the sound of the then north stand and the occasional churchman involvement. But I do wonder with thoughts on the likes of pompy is it a weekly thint or is it something commented on when they appear in cup games.

I think it also helps that they have one song to unite behind and they do that well. The atmosphere can be fantastic inside PR but it can equally be a bit hit and miss. Yesterday was an odd one as there were so many new faces in the stands. I was surprised how many ST holders near me hadn't taken up the opportunity on their seat. I think the club got the pricing structure just right and it gave occasional supporters to attend. I've no problem with this.

I would say that Portsmouth fans are just as vocal for their side when things are good, as they are against their side when things are bad. I have been to many, many noisier grounds than Fratton Park. Palace, Sunderland etc. They don't stand out for me.

Portsmouth is also a place where not just one stand sings. Which is rare these days I grant you, but we are hindered by the fact that the SAR, for example, rarely gets involved to the extent Churchmans used to do when it was terracing.

| Pompey fans on 16:43 - Jan 11 with 1235 views | grow_our_own | That Pompey home end is the epitome of acoustic design. Side-walls down close to the pitch (no filled corners), single tier, steep, and close to the pitch. Simple, yet very effective as 12th man. So many clubs could learn from it. | | | |

We could really have done with a Koplike stand in the rebuild, I know we were limited by space at the North Stand end sadly

| Pompey fans on 17:39 - Jan 11 with 1059 views | grow_our_own | Agreed, one or other end should have been single-tier. Overlapping tiers are good for side stands as they keep punters close to the pitch. But you want your noisy ultras to be in a single-tier. Design fail at Churchmans end and/or failure to convince council planners to build North stand over Sir Alf Ramsey Way. Single tier is cheaper too. | | | |

Agree. I've been in the Fratton End for a nothing kind of match and apart from the odd play up Pompey it was quiet. But yes, big team/big match the whole ground gets going.

we werent limited by space, we were limited by a lack of vision. both new stand builds were done as quickly and as easily as possible, which meant simply building a new tier on top of the old ones, they wanted to get those extra tickets sold because of the higher demand for premier league tickets. its the reason why despite all the noises about capacity now, we shouldnt be rushed into making knee jerk stand improvements, they need to think carefully and produce a stand that absolutely delivers on every mark be that atmosphere, facilities, catering, corporate, view, and not just more seats.

Wasn't lack of vision from the club in regards to the north, we wanted a kop end, however the houses behind refused it based on sunlight issues.

You sure about that? I’m pretty sure that the kop end at Pompey is probably smaller than the SBR stand in both size and capacity. If we wanted a kop end I’m sure that would have been relatively easy to do but Sheepy wanted to increase capacity more than anything else.

I don't know 100% without being a town employee at the time if that was the end result but my school friend lived there at the time and they had held meetings and voted no against that design but accepted the others.

Yeah as I recall Sheepshanks was actually keen on a single-tier stand but they couldn't do it due to the houses behind

| Pompey fans on 14:18 - Jan 12 with 197 views | One_Bobby_Petta | I went to Portsmouth away when we had David Johnson, can’t remember the year - there was an amazing atmosphere, suspect there still is I used to sit in the North stand 93 - 02 ish and now in Pioneer West whatever it’s called I find it amusing when Mark Ashton and KMC say what an amazing atmosphere there is, from where I sit (almost next to them) it’s almost none existent and getting worse by the match I think there a few contributing factors but mainly the way we now play football which is slow, boring and doesn’t excite the crowd - this isn’t an attack on the team and KMC, it’s just what I think is a fact, if it get’s us promoted which I suspect and hope it will, job done. During the Burley promotion seasons the place was a cauldron and the Bolton play off matches were the best I’ve ever heard and experienced, we didn’t need warm up music, we didn’t need a song, we played good exciting football The two promotion seasons under KMC were great, Sarmiento, Burns, Hirst at Barnsley (away I know) and countless other amazing times. We didn’t need warm up music, we didn't need a song, we played good exciting football and I couldn’t wait to get back to PR for the next match. You could almost leave out of breath with the heart pumping it was so good These are the two best periods of atmosphere I’ve experienced in PR These days, from the second half of the premier league season we play a very different type of football which doesn’t lift the crowd, I think it’s as simple as that. It’s not the disassembled promotion team, it’s not the fact Sam Morsey, Connor Chaplin and Nathan Broadhead left, we just play slow possession based football. There were signs of the old style of play at Coventry away, that was great night and the town fans went toe to toe with CCFC And the acoustics of the NS don’t amplify what noise there is …. | | | |
