| What is wrong with some people? 10:46 - Jan 25 with 2263 views | StokieBlue | Two hikers get stranded on Scafell Pike and have to be rescued by mountain rescue in a 7 hour operation. They are then given a room by a pub that opened late to ensure they had somewhere to stay and recuperate a 35% discount. Instead of paying for the room they give a false name, don't settle the bill and steal the mountain rescues head torches. https://www.theguardian.com/uk SB | | | | |

It's easy to say it's symptomatic of today's society but the reaction of the public to the Wasdale mountain rescue team, who do fantastic work, proves it isn't. I guess we'll all have to rely on karma to catch up with them as they clearly have no conscience.

Met a guy when on holiday in Edale a few years ago. He was just starting a supposed walk of the Pennine Way. No maps, compass or weather proof clothing of any description. Said that he was taking it on after a discussion in the pub the night before where someone bet him he couldn't do it. Our party advised him to either forget it or at least get some advice from the visitor centre. Never did find out what befell him.

Scafell Pike is a bloody hard hike in the summer. A little drop of rain and some of it can be lethal. If they hiked it in the middle of winter you would imagine they are experienced hikers, which makes their actions even worse as any hiker would know how important the rescue service and local hotels are to their experience. If they aren't experienced hikers then they are bloody irresponsible for attempting the climb at this time of year.

Working for mountain rescue must be incredibly rewarding and frustrating in equal measure!

I hope next time they do that (and they will) they do not have the means to contact the mountain rescue people or anyone also and pay the price. Harsh? Not for them, no. I’ve done a lot of hiking, walking and of course skiing. You never treat the mountains or indeed anything like that without the utmost respect. That includes understanding the ‘rules’, having the right kit and preparing right.

Scafell Pike is NOT a bloody hard hike in the summer. It's tough for beginners without any fellwalking experience because its quite steep even on the easiest route, but the fact that I did it in summer when I was 5 with my family is proof enough that it's not bloody hard. A walk in the park? No, and it's certainly irresponsible to do it in winter without experience because the weather conditions can change for the worse very quickly.

Don't be silly, you know as well as the rest of us that hiking and other outdoor pursuits are the preserve of white British people only. That's why we are told how racist the countryside is.

I guess the difficulty is relative to the persons fitness and hiking experience isn't it? If you do that sort of thing often then it's a piece of cake. I am firmly in he amateur/casual category, and an out of shape middle aged person with it. I did Snowden about ten years ago, did nothing similar since until I finally ticked off Scafell Pike the summer just gone - took along my teenage daughter who is usually allergic to anything physically strenuous. We both did fine. I did at least know to do plenty of research in advance and take appropriate clothing and kit. We were blessed with perfect weather conditions - I wouldn't have gone otherwise, just wouldn't enjoy it the same in mist and drizzle never mind more dangerous weather. Glad my youngest was able to appreciate the views. I did find it harder going than Snowden, despite the shorter trek. The rocky conditions underfoot don't help and if a mist drops and takes away your visibility I can see how easily some might get into trouble. All the top UK peaks are so accessible to Joe Public that you're going to get people do it on a whim with no suitable prep. Some will get into trouble. No excuse for the final actions of the two in this story of course - hope they get named and shamed.

I agree with all of that and it was definitely more demanding than Snowdon. The point I was making was that I wasn't really a very experienced walker at the age of five.

I've done 5 Munros in Scotland but hiked Scafell Pike on a very rainy and foggy day mid August and found it very slippery.

Still have Ben Nevis to do before I complete the hat-trick. How does that compare? No desire whatsoever to attempt all three in 24 hours!

| What is wrong with some people? on 13:27 - Jan 26 with 351 views | ClareBlue | My dad was in the fell rescue in the Yorkshire Dales and there were always rescues of people unprepared for weather changes or breaking ankles due to poor footware. He used to see it as part of making the Dales accesdible to everyone and I never heard him judge anyone who needed the services. But I also never heard of anything but rescued people speaking positively of the people who rescued them and running off without paying a bill, stealing equipment or give false details would have been incomprehensible. It feels like a new low. It probably isn't and people do alot worse, but it certainly feels like it. | | | |
