Just had this come up in my feed from the Ipswich Past and Present page.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Brilliant. Thanks for sharing.

Is that the old chicken run running along the Cobbold side?

I first went to Portman Road in 1953, and it didn’t look anything like that.

The largest wicket in the world. What’s that all about? I know we shared with a cricket club, but that’s huge.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

I was thinking AI generated but maybe not.

Ipswich and East Suffolk cricket club history says they stayed at PR until 1936 (same year we went professional). So the cricket boundary is ok for 1933.

Chicken Run went up in 1906 so that fits too.

I think BBC Verify would give it the thumbs up. Great picture.

I have slapped the picture through an AI upscaler. It's not perfect but it helps to pic up some details.

👍 Brilliant.

And I'm assuming that's the Churchman's cigarettes factory to the south with the big chimney stack?

That building at the end of PR on the bend, trying to picture PR now, is that the same building?

Yes. Was the Archant office until fairly recently I think. Owners of EADT and Ipswich Star.

Yes that's Churchman's and the white building just to the left of that is the old cricket pavilion. I believe that is where Alf Ramsey ran the club from and players got changed when we were Champions of England in 1962 (but not when Bobby conquered Europe...)

That was an intersting location for a cattle market. Did rum ol’ boys from the farms of Suffolk drive into the metropolis of Ipswich with an empty truck and drive home with new cows? Is that how it worked?

Reasonably close to the railway station, so butchers from London could load up what they'd just bought and ship it to the captial.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

That’s an enormously long wicket on that cricket square. Bowling a yorker is going to need some energy.

Fascinating also to see all the long disappeared houses. And at the top middle in white, I think you can make out the Black Horse, with the church (St. Peter's?) near to it.

Here's a link to a 1927 map which you can zoom in on to see the ground and stand.

It gets tricky to ID buildings near to the top of the picture without civic drive there to help position things.

It only closed in 1985, and here's an article about it. I certainly remember it as a cattle market.

😁

My Grandad told me. He also told me about the chicken run.

Don't think I'd ever seen them in an aerial picture before though!
