Like many others I've been scratching my head to understand why we've allowed Szmodics to go out on loan, leaving us with 'only' 24 senior players.

I wonder if we're close to the rolling 3 year PSR limit and needed his wages off the books, having signed Mehmeti and Dan Neil?

He doesn't want to be here, he's wanted out for a little while now. I don't see the point keeping a player who doesn't want to play for the team.

I think you may be right. Southampton too have unloaded several players including selling Armstrong to Wolves. I think balancing the books is a consideration over taking a punt on an unknown so called striker!

I doubt that very much. If we needed him off the books that badly we'd have taken £5m for him on Friday to get him permanently gone rather than letting him go out on loan on the Monday. It's more likely that he wants to go and play regular football somewhere and he's well down the pecking order here so it's in everyone's interests to let him go.

20 weeks at £30k PW is £600k. If we were skirting that close to the line, I'd expect to see a LOT of similar actions and decisions.

Seems more likely that Sam doesn't fit with the current tactics and squad.

I very much doubt it, given previous sets of accounts, how much we've received in transfer fees and parachute money. Unless everybody got insane wages last season, we didn't even spend that much, by Prem standards.

Think it is simply the case that things weren't working out with Szmodics and Town, on tactical and medical levels, perhaps others, too (e.g. not getting enough game time to keep his Ireland ambitions going). Freeing up a squad space allows options, such as getting in a free agent, or perhaps registering the Chelsea youth Rundle so he can play First Team games.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Very doubtful - I would imagine it is more to do with where he is in the pecking order at the club, especially after Mehmeti coming in, and his desire to play more football considering he is heading towards 31 - and the club has been very fair to others in a similar situation.

No doubt the fact it is Eustace at Derby will have helped to grease the wheels for SS.

Finally the club will be hoping that his goals take points off our other promotion rivals . . .

Like others have said, I doubt it’s that.
The PSR point I haven’t seen mentioned is that he still has 2.5 years left on a 4 year contract so his book value (assuming the £9m fee is correct) is around £5.6m. Selling him now for less than that would crystallise a PSR loss. Again, we could almost certainly afford within PSR it but it’s not a good look.

They guy has been largely injured this season, we've signed Mehmeti, and Nunez is also ahead of him. Add that to apparently he's not overly happy and it makes sense to get him out for now, hopefully he gets fit and either we get a bigger deal in the summer or he comes back into the fold fully fit. It's disappointing but it largely makes sense.

The fact that we appear to have looked at Surridge and the numbers involved there mean we're probably not that close.

Incompatible with our reported Azeez bids, which I'm minded to believe. If it were PSR then we'd be five months away from a potential fire sale, or with little room to manoeuvre in the league above, so let's hope not. I trust we've been more sensible and have a gentler off-ramp.

Leaving ourselves a player short is a head-scratcher though. Didn't think we'd do that to ourselves and it lends credibility to the rumours of an incident inside the camp.

I don't think there are any money or PSR issues. Sam has been a bit of a flop. He finds himself 3rd choice or worse with Akpom, Egeli, Clarke also able to play at 10. There is also a bunch of rumours around the player. So it is probably just best to get him gone from the group.
