Bit of a stretch to say the Labour cabinet have put their party before Epstein's victims! How many degrees of separation is that?!

| Anas Sawar, Labour leader in Scotland on 16:44 - Feb 9 by DJR | They appear to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. An already deeply unpopular Starmer is a lame duck, which is not good for the running of the country. And there is no obvious successor. As I have said before, the only way I think they could get out of this mess politically would be to have as leader someone untainted by what has gone on in recent years: a bit like Major. The only person who fits that bill is Burnham but the right will do everything they can to stop him being selected as an MP. It's a complete and utter shambles. [Post edited 9 Feb 17:43]

The media will simply turn on whoever the successor is when that time comes. People like Beth Rigby, Laura Kuensberg etc just want the ‘drama’ it gives them. Their tweets this afternoon, you can smell the disappointment. And keeping this up, saves them having to ask real questions about Farage.

And also changing the leader just gives Reform an even easier path to government because they go with a very easy strapline and say that the new leader wasn't elected etc.

| Anas Sawar, Labour leader in Scotland on 16:18 - Feb 9 by itfcjoe | I just don't see how it improves things for Starmer to go, the country and the world is in a precarious position and needs strong leadership on global stage - not a navel gazing appeal to members who are much further left than the country is |
Several problems here. How are you proposing the strong leadership that the country needs on the global stage is going to come from a fatally wounded PM who has proven consistently that he has catastrophically poor judgement, no political programme and is presiding over a party that is entirely rotten and has been built and shaped in the New Labour image of Mandelson for the last 40 years? Secondly, the idea this is navel gazing from 'far left' members who are out of step with the country is total nonsense. It's lazy analysis and the result of people swallowing the idea that Corbyn etc and moderate democratic socialism was beyond the pale and unelectable. It was only the case because of the hatchet job that Mandelson and Mcsweeney did! Mcsweeney has no political ability whatsoever but he was an effective wrecker. The entire Labour party needs to be burnt to the ground. It's been revealed for what it has become - a vehicle captured by a nasty and self serving elite who are entirely out of touch. And anyone thinking Burnham is the answer - god help them.

This mess is of Labour's own making, and if Farage is the result they will share a lot of the blame. They went into the election with no narrative, and have governed similarly. They were also dishonest about the state of the finances, as were the Tories. The Ming vase strategy didn't even work in terms of popularity, with only 33% of the vote, and this at a time when the Tories were at their lowest ebb since 1997. This was not a sufficient bedrock for when things inevitably got difficult in government, and they have compounded things by pandering to the right and therefore losing "progressives" to other parties. They have, he's bang to rights on poor judgment at best, employing someone who was visiting a known pedo, despite several warnings against. It's pretty black and white. Imagine the uproar if this was the Tories, I mean the country nearly erupted over a slice of cake. [Post edited 9 Feb 17:12]

| Anas Sawar, Labour leader in Scotland on 15:55 - Feb 9 by DJR | From the Guardian, but the more that goes on the more things seem like the entire Government is merely reacting to events and not in control. They really don't want a leadership election now. Starmer receives public statements of support from every member of his cabinet And here are more statements from cabinet ministers backing Keir Starmer. From Yvette Cooper, the foreign secretary Later this week, Keir Starmer will lead our delegation to the Munich Security Conference. At this crucial time for the world, we need his leadership not just at home but on the global stage, and we need to keep our focus where it matters, on keeping our country safe. From Pat McFadden, the work and pensions secretary As someone said to me in the constituency on Friday “tell your boss to keep going.” I did and I hope he does. From Darren Jones, the chief secretary to the PM The battle for Britain in the years ahead is between a modern, diverse Britain led by Labour or a dark, divisive Britain under Reform. All of us in the Labour Party must get behind the Prime Minister, rise to the challenge and deliver a richer, fairer and stronger future. From Bridget Phillipson, the education secrtary From Ed Miliband, the energy secretary Keir has earned the right to deliver the change he has promised and do what he cares about - which is to serve the country. This is not the time for the government to turn inwards on itself. We must focus on delivering the change we promised the country. From Peter Kyle, the business secretary From Jo Stevens, the Welsh secretary Keir Starmer is a good, decent man with public service running through his veins. He came into politics for all the right reasons. He’s defied the naysayers many time and he’ll do so again. He’s changing and renewing our country and has restored it’s reputation across the world. From Jonathan Reynolds, the chief whip The Prime Minister has my full support and is delivering the change the country voted for. He won a mandate to serve working people and the country and we must continue to deliver on the progress we’ve already made. Resorting to infighting now does not serve the country. And – within the last few minutes – from Shabana Mahmood, the home secretary The PM won a five year mandate from the British people just 18 months ago. Labour governments don’t come along often. It is a privilege to serve in one and we must not waste a second. The PM has my full support. Let’s get on with changing the country for the better. Liz Kendall, the work and pensions secretary, and Wes Streeting, the health secretary, have not put out supportive statements on X. But they have both given interviews backing Starmer. (I will post the details shortly.) And Angela Smith, the leader of the Lords, has not declared her loyalty to Starmer on X either. But she has had the good sense not to post on X since the summer of 2024. Her spokesperson has put out a statement saying “of course” she supports the PM. That means Starmer has now secured public expressions of support from every member of his cabinet. |
So it's transpired they were ordered to tweet messages of support. It gets better.

It doesn't really matter if it's now or later does it. They are finished. With Wes or whoever it is. And deservedly so. It's all so tedious. The only way it could get worse is if we are told by the hacks that Al Carns is an impressive dark horse because he's got a square jaw (that will be viewed as more important than any political ability). All of this was inevitable from 2020. What a waste of 6 years. [Post edited 9 Feb 17:29]

This year's James Purnell. Ironically, had Labour MP's followed Purnell over the top in 2009 Labour may well have won the 2010 election. Labour have always lacked the ruthlessness of the Tories when it comes to committing regicide.

Labour don’t need to and won’t call any election until 2029. Their majority determines that and Tories can’t really challenge as they changed leader 4 times without any hint of an election. Farage wasn’t elected as a leader of course at all.

Can anyone see Farage being an MP by 2029? It’s why he is desperate for an election now. Their ‘leadership’ record isn’t exactly stellar either

Well, I guess 'delaying the inevitable for as long as possible' could count as a political programme of sorts, so it's more than Starmer and Mcsweeney had. Do you fancy taking on chief adviser role?

But not several hours later than it should have been if it were to be effective. Instead, what Sarwar has done has grabbed all the headlines. The expression headless chickens springs to mind. It's almost as if they can't function without being told what to do by McSweeney.

you're not the only one with principles, so don't try to play the pure and holy card. we disagree politically, you support corbyn's policies that the electorate rejected, but we both have principles. there are many things which this government has done which i support strongly. most of them are long-term and slow burn which was exactly what people have been demanding. that is in the context of an appalling economic inheritance. from the bond markets to the public reaction to even moderate tax changes, financially the restrictions are very real. equally it has had more than it's share of cock-ups which is frustrating. partly it suffers from starmer not being a politician and lacking those nastier skills. seriously though, it you just want to wave your principles about then corbyn's party is the one for you.

Governments collapse. How will they make it to 2029? There is no political ability in the party. They've all been hand selected by Mandelson because of compliance! They are all cut from the same cloth.
